Touring Bags - Which One?
« on: August 25, 2006, 10:34:03 AM »

Hey folks,

I'm in the market for buying a touring type bag that will safely mount up on the Premium Tour-Pak Rack.

I've been looking at the H-D/SAC nylon Luggage Rack Bag #94798-00 and then looked at the T-Bag Dekker and now, Kuryakyn's Tour Trunk Roll Bag

EZ,
many have looked kuryakyn bag ( see threads under riding gear). Looks nice on bike. I have the saddlemen montana bag (9x14x21), larger bag like Dekker, but holding two half helmets plus rain gear does require some room. Use this for longer trips. Just another idea, John

John,

Thanks for your info.

EZ,
The premium rack is larger than the SEUC rack and should fit perfectly( have friend with same on 03 ultra nonCVO). Has straps for rack mount on bottom of bag and two velcro attach straps for side closet to seat.  Has removeable(and storable) rain bag. Relatively light weight for size of bag ( much less than Dekker bag). Soft sided. Used on two week 4000 mile trip at Sturgis last year without any problems.  Because of size is easy to overpack!!! Especially since I rarely get to put anything of mine in it!!!  Hope that helps John

I actually have a couple but the one that I've been using the most is the Decker Supreme.

Dekker. It fits great on top and will also fit inside the tour pack when loaded. Mine has thousands of miles in the rain and no leaks.

I swear by the Dekker Supreme. I only wish it would fit the luggage rack on the SEUC. I bought a Willie and Max Main Bag that fits nicely, but capacity wise it is a bit small. I mount it backwards on the luggage rack and use the velcro mounting straps to secure my rain gear to the outside rear of the pack. It works well and saves some room inside the bag. Just my opinion.....

I started out with the Dekker Supreme in mind but then convinced myself that it would be too large for what I originally intended to carry (2 - helmets & rain suits) and that the tempation would be there (mostly for my wife) for overpacking.  Also, was thinking that the overall width w/side pockets attached would make for a drag parachute behind me because I don't have a fairing to help with windflow....I do use a full-size RK windshield on the SERK.

Do you guys with the Dekkers notice much in the way of wind drag?  27 1/2 inches advertised width seems pretty wide....without the side pockets is 21 1/2....but with the wife along you know the side pockets are going to have to be attached.

I know riding two-up for a long haul requires carrying a lot of extras but, I'm trying to minimalize this best I can.

Thanks again for the input...it is greatly appreciated!

I have the Dekker also and for the few times I've used it I haven't noticed any drag. The additional storage is great for small lightweight stuff, and the main compartment I use for rain suits, bike cover, and maybe a sweatshirt or jacket. It has removable padding that will allow you more storage, but I've never taken them out. One thing to consider when getting any bag that will fit on tourpak is you have to be concerned of how much weight you put in it, and when you want to open tourpak it's a good idea to take the bag off as the additional weight on the hinge and strap isn't a good idea.

OK...I went about looking at some luggage options late yesterday at several different cycle dealers and a couple accessories shops and decided to go with the T-bag Dekker Supreme...which was my initial choice before I started this thread.  There are a lot of options out there and many have some unique features to consider....but, specific needs dictated my final choice...along with suggestions/recommendations from the good folks on this site.

I was very impressed with the Saddlemen Montana bag like John has...that wound up being my second choice.  Actually Saddlemen has quite a variety of quality bags for every application imaginable.

My third choice was by Dowco which makes the Iron Rider series "Main Bag", which is the basis for a stackable system...hence the name.  It is one that deserves checking out (11 x 11 x 19) and has expandable ends/rain cover/etc. and lists just under $100.

The Kuryakyn Tour Trunk Rollbag is pretty cool and in high demand...a little smaller than what I was after...it is probably the best looking bag a person could mount to any tour rack.

The H-D/SAC was somewhat disappointing to me only after seeing what else is out there.  It is fully functional and built extremely water-proof but, WAY over-priced in comparison for what you get.

I did some internet searching for reputable sellers at cheapest price and Zanotti's has the Dekker Supreme online for $134.88 + shipping.  I ordered through Dennis Kirk as they offer price matching (actually they beat any competitor's price by a buck) and delivery is fast...always two days to us.  I've ordered from them before and have always had great service/no dissapointments.

Anyway thats sort of a run down on what I found....and can't wait to get out on the road next week.

Thanks to everyone for all of the suggestions/recommendations and the good advice from d00d about the load strain on the tour-pak.    [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

*** One thing that I should mention is that I took both of our helmets and both rainsuits in their pouches and tried the fitment in a couple of the bags...just to be sure the stuff would fit.
