Radio Problem - FLHXSE3
« on: October 02, 2012, 04:47:45 AM »

This just happened twice to me, Saturday and yesterday.  I was driving down the road and the left side speakers either stopped working completely or went very low.  Came back on again, I hit a bump and they went off again.  I had the left saddlebag off a few days before and, since it appears that there may be an amp in there, I thought maybe the plug to the saddlebag was loose.  I pulled over, unplugged the left bag and plugged it back it again.  Worked fine for a couple days until yesterday.  Same thing after about 45 minuts of riding.  Stopped to go into a store, came out and it was fine.  Anybody ever have this happen or have any idea what it is?  Thanks.

From what you describe it does sound like a connection issue.  When you had the left saddlebag removed, were you washing?  If so, you may have some left over moisture and/or some corrosion on the leads.  Check that and clean/dry as necessary.  I also have a small tube of dielectric grease...helps with corrosion and moisture and doesn't take much.  I know, the connection is suppose to be water tight but NOTHING on a Harley is completely water tight.  If that looks fine, check the leads going to the amp in the left side bag.  There is a connector (found it by accident one day...don't ask) that is internal to that bag to the amp.  Amp is in a pouch in the back of the saddlebag.  Also, there is a lead connector running to that speaker...check them.  While you are at it, you may want to check the plug on the right side bag and the internal connectors on that bag, too.  If the speaker is still dropping out, may have one of the channels going bad in the rear amp.  There is a couple threads on that issue in electronics.

I'm sure you will have some more suggestions so, hopefully, you can fix the problem.  Good luck and keep us informed of your progress... :2vrolijk_21:

All good advice.  I was planning on checking all of the connections today when I get home from work.  I don't know much about the audio on these bikes, but I understand that there are two amps.  One in the left bag and one under the fairing. If there was a bad connection in the rear amp would it cause all of the speakers on the left cut out?  I guess another way to check that is to disconnect the left bag harness while all of the speakers are working and see if the front left ones cut out as a result.

You are correct on the two amps and their locations.  Must have read your post wrong as I was thinking just your left rear was going out and not the entire left side speakers.  Still could be the same issues with a bad connection but may include a bad connection on the rear of your head unit or somewhere down the line.  Reading some of the radio issue threads will help in the diagnosis.  It's not uncommon for something to not be installed correctly at the factory (I know that is really hard to believe... ::))

If all else fails, take it to a good, reputible dealer.  Hopefully you have one of those.  Again, as you study the threads in the electronics portion of this forum, you will note stereo/electronic issues are common and the fixes are all over the place.  Good luck tp
