I cant believe that we're in the 21st century and talking about pumping grease in our expensive motorcycles like a piece of farm machinery.  C'mon moco!

I went to one of the oil change places here(Oil Can Henrys) and had them pump mine, actually they handed me the gun, and I pumped it full and it came out both top and bottom and it is still coming out of the bottom on hot days.... As was stated prior, the bearings are pre greased during assembly and that will in most cases will last for many, many trouble free years of riding. I have taken steering head-sets apart and some appeared to have never been touched, or greased and one bike was an '83 and it was still perfect in function would have gone much farther. I pumped mine full to take up slop and then see if a head shake was being caused by excess play in that area. I ended up learning that it helped and I had to adjust for fall away... Now I got spare grease on stuff that I will be cleaning up for awhile....   :/

And for those that have never taken it apart to do the bearings, it is no small job.  Here is a pricture all apart.

So look at the grease fitting, it is located almost at the bottom of the neck.  The chance of getting grease all the way up & into the top bearing is questionanble. Granted the bottom bearing is the one supporting all the weight & would be the 1st to fail without grease.

That is why one might just try taking up the slop with grease and if it is better, and it will only last for a few minutes but if U have an SG, the above post and pic by Sklywag shows why!!!
Now a RG is easier, just remove the gauge pod that holds the tach and speedo and there it is. Pretty easy compared to the SG!!

i once pumped the neck full on a sportster i own, never again will i do that.
for the next two riding seasons all i got done was wipe grease off the bottom of the neck before riding it.
fifty miles into a ride i was cleaning it off again.
i finally took the front end apart and cleaned the neck out and hand packed the bearings and all is good now.
