Radio by itself yes.  AVC won't work.  To use any of the radio's external accessory modules you'll also need one of the several different overlay harnesses.

The connectors for the radio on your bike are not the same as those that are on the radio you are looking at. The radio for a 03 is made by Radio Design and the radio on a 09 is made by Harmon Kardon.

Jim, that main radio connector is the same.  I've put one of the HK radios in two 05s, an 03, an 02 and a 2000 model bike.  You have to add one of the few different overlay harnesses offered to plug in to the other plug in the radio to match the other functions desired.  You will lose AVC, though there's a way around that if one is willing to do a bit more rewiring.

Did not know there was a harness available to connect the Harmon Kardon radio to the system wiring on a pre 2006 bike. Good to know. Thanks for teaching me some thing today.

Actually it's not even a separate harness Jim.  I was surprised by that the first time I got in to it also.  The main connector to the HK radio is the same as the main (and only) connector to the RadioSound radios.

The other harness that might be necessary comes in to play when an XM module or CB module or one of the several other accessory external HK add-ons are used.  Then one of the several different overlay harnesses must be used that plug in to the other plug on the back of the HK radios.  That plug didn't exist on the RadioSound radios.

Couple of qualifiers to keep in mind though.  If you take a new HK radio and put it in an older bike it won't work.  Or at least it won't work well.  An audible beeping error tone will come through that you can't make go away.  If it's a used radio, however, that's already been programmed to work in some other bike it'll slide in the older bike and be a nearly plug and play retrofit.  The only thing that won't work is the AVC function.  Even that can be defeated with some rewiring; but it's probably more hassle than it's worth.

N.B.  It's also the case that the AVC problem can be corrected through software.  Iron Cross can do a cheap reprogram on the HK radios to make AVC work on the older bike without any rewiring having to be done.  They've done that for radios that went in an 03 and a 2000 model for me (if my memory doesnt suck).

Where can I get this "Overlay Harness"??  I have a radio out of my 2010 Street Glide that I want to put in a 2002 Ultra.  I would like for the CB and Intercom to still work.  Will it work thru the radio like the newer models? Then I can eliminate the unsightly switches on the dash panel :)

Radio Sound Ultra radios have TWO 23 pin outs on the back of the radio. The second is.connected to an audio harness for rear speakers, cb, passenger controls, etc.

The HK  comes with a 23 connection for the basic audio functions and a second connection for the Ultra functions that has 35 pin outs that do what the second 23 connector did on the RS Ultra radio PLUS support new accessories like XM, iPod, etc.

There is no harness to conver am 02 Ultra for use with the HK. What is necessary is to buy the 35 position connector--HD will sell it to you. You then remove the wires from the 23 position connector from the Ultra harness and, using an '06 or newer wiring diagram, assemble the 35 wire connector and plug it into the HK.

If you want more info, PM me a phone number--it's a pita to type on my iPhone.

I am trying to do the same thing. I plan on getting a used radio, so it will already be calibrated. Is there a way to have all the other functions of the radio enabled prior to installation, as I am told this cannot be done once it is installed? I was also told that the '05 AVC can be reprogrammed to work with the HK radio. Since I don't have the second 23-pin connector, I would just need to buy the 35-pin PN 69200106 to connect to everything? Can you think of anything I am overlooking?

Other way around actually.  The radio can be reprogrammed so the AVC function works on the 05.  Have to send it to Iron Cross.

 ;D That's what I meant to type.

Anyhow, Iron Cross told me the dealer could enable the AVC after it's installed, through a submenu in the radio.

They also said they'd walk the dealer through the process, if need be.  :2vrolijk_21:

That's new info to me.  The AVC function shows on the menus but I never saw the function actually work with the HK radios on the 05 and earlier bikes.  Have put four of them in and it didn't work on any of them.  Honestly never worried about it too much as it's just a quick thumb flick to change it though.

There is an old thread somewhere wherein someone regained AVC function on an HK retrofit without software.  Accomplished it with a wiring change.  But for him AVC didn't work either (without the alteration).

The HK AVC function can be programed to work with bikes back to 98.
The 04 and 05 bikes use a digital system, but it's different than the 06 and newer.
The 04 and 05 bikes can be reprogrammed via a hidden sub-menu in the radio by the user after the radio is installed.

03 and older use an analog system. The radio needs to be re-flashed in order for this to work.
The catch here, it you have it done by a dealer, is the radio needs to be on an 06 or newer bike to be flashed.
We have the ability to do it on the bench.
