Top end noise
« on: October 14, 2012, 06:52:26 PM »

2010;I have had a rattle in what seems to be coming from the top end for some time now. I also have had oil consumption which is a 1 quart every 1500-1800 miles for the past 20K or so. I took the bike in for the 65,000 mile service and got them to perform a leak down test which it failed so they decided to do a valve job and found a scratch in one cylinder and the piston skirt in the same. They are replcing the cylinder and piston and doing a valve job. I asked about the rattle and the mechanic said it was most likely a lifter bleeding down and that the warranty (extended) would most likely not cover it without a hassle so I bought the new lifters so they could install them which they are not charging me for. Does the 110 just have more engine noise? I hope the lifters fix the rattle but my other bikes, 2008 FLHX/2002 FLHRC did not rattle at idle. Thanks.

Not all 110's are noisy.  I know of one that's not, but seems that a lot are reported to be....sometimes changing out parts, you get lucky and it's quiet.  spyder

It's better now after I got it back and my oil pressure guage is reading higher than ever before about 6 pounds higher. I'll just turn the radio up and ride I guess...

Glad you got it fixed. I know that is a relief.
My 2011 SESG had a bit of noise in it when new. I broke it in, changed the oil and it seemed worse.
I had it dyno tuned by Ed @Dyno Difference in Dallas Tx. My engine noise is all but gone now.
This is just my experience. It is still a bit noisy but not bad. I am happy.
Hope yours works out great. Good luck.

Thanks Ray. BTW went through Texas this past summer down to Big Bend National Park, what a great area with very nice roads. Hope to get back soon. I've traveled through the west a lot and southwest Texas is impressive. Ride safe, Gene
