Transmission Oil Leak
« on: October 15, 2012, 07:46:42 AM »

I have a 2005 Elecratraglide CVO with 58,000 miles. It now is leaking oil around the shifter shaft seal. While at a dealer I asked about replacing the seal and the service manager noticed that the leaking oil was red and asked if I was using Redline Oil. He said that they have seen several transmission main bearing failures with Red Line and Royal Purple Transmission oil. He only recommended using HD Syn 3 or Amsoil, which is what he sold. Since it was time to change the oil I bought Amsoil and changed; now the leak is twice as bad as before and I am going to tear it down and replace the seal. It looks like a pretty straight forward job according to the service manual. Are there any issues I need to be aware of? Is the seal easily removed and replaced once I get the primary off? Since I will have the outer and inner primary off would it be wise to change the final drive belt even though it appears to be fine? How long should the belt last? Also, has anyone heard of this problem with Red Line and Royal Purple transmission oil?

Thanks for your help.

pretty common most replaced with cometic double lip seal. Id inspect the belt carefully and only replace if it has a problem. the redline heavy shockproof is the stuff to use. Forget the dealer bologna about oil. bike made it 58000 right? :bananarock:

Thanks for the reply. Where to order the cometic double lip seal? I plan on going back with the redline after changing the seal.

When installing the new seal, put tape over the shaft splines so you don't nick the seal.

Drive the new seal in with a socket.  Preferably a Cometic double lipped seal as Van stated (another thread on here stated Harley's seal is now double lipped???).

Pop the old seal out by drilling a couple holes (careful not to nick the case)..

Check your calendar and begin.

A couple thoughts:

replace the compensator bolt and starter jackshaft bolt seal.

look at the inner splines of the clutch basket hub real good for stripped splines

look at the starter flywheel ringear real good for chipped/missing teeth

Hope this helps.
