Scuff mark on saddlebag lid handle from plastic tab
« on: October 15, 2012, 02:57:26 PM »

So I had noticed this slight scuff mark on the outside of my painted saddlebag lid handle on my FLHXSE3.  For the life of me I could not figure out where it came from but it appeared to be slowly getting worse.  Then lo and behold just this morning I put 2 and 2 together and saw that when the saddlebag is open that the lid handle rides on those 2 black tabs to keep the handle and saddlebag from hitting together when the saddlebag lid is open.  I've had an FLHTC before but it had chrome handles and I guess it wan't effected by this.  Is anyone else having this problem with their painted saddlebag lid handles?  I use the right side saddlebag often and it's getting pretty bad and I have noticed the left side is slightly get scuffed also from the few times I get into it.  Thoughts, ideas, suggestions?  I'd like to think this isn't an "it is what it is" type thing as I don't really see any type of adjustments to possibly fix the issue.

Thanks

Every so often I just polish mine out gently with a very fine automotive 3M brand hand polish then wax.  Makes them as new again!   :2vrolijk_21:

Yeah Fly Dog I actually did that a while back before I actually knew what was causing the problem and it helped but it seems to be into the clear coat and will never look as it did before I am sure.  Guess I was hoping for some sort of fix.  Thanks for the tidbit though!

You could polish it back like new again and then cover the area with a strip of the 3M clear tape like the factory put in certain areas to protect the paint just like at the top of your side covers to keep the seat from scuffing them.  You can buy the stuff in sheets and then custom trim it to the size and shape you want prior to installing.

Now that's a great idea there.  Thanks for that suggestion and thanks Jerry for the link!

Make a template first by making (cutting) your template out of manila folder type material, then use a razor knife on a cutting board to do the cutting of the 3M tape versus using scissors which doesn't do as good of a job.  Don't ask me how I know.   :nixweiss:

Yes, all good stuff FLY-DOG.  I was just looking at it yesterday and it looks like a well cut piece will fit in nice just to the left of the reflector where the scuff mark is.  I'll go ahead and do both sides also.  Thanks for all your good advice!
