Andrews 57
« on: October 19, 2012, 11:29:37 AM »

Anyone use the Andrews 57 cam yet? I'm getting ready to do an exhaust and a tuner shortly and I'm debating weather to pull the trigger on a cam also. I don't really want to pull the heads to do gaskets......I'm figuring adjustable pushrods and the bolt-in Andrews 57 should do it. Any thoughts or comments?

Hapy with my Andrews 57.  Pushrods were fine as well and didnt need replacing.  I have a dyno sheet posted in another thread.

They don't like a lot of compression, I can tell you that......!!!!!!

Doc - I don't want to pull the heads to put .030 gaskets in......is stock compression OK? I plan on a complete exhaust and keeping the stock CVO aircleaner and a tune.

All I can tell you is I nstalled a set in a 103'' 10.2 compression, .030 head gaskets, Baisley Superstock heads and I got 101/108. The same cams in a stock 103'' I got 98/109.
I expected to see 105/116 from the 57 with head work and a little higher compression but the power wasn't there....I tried three maps, I installed different timing tables....I actually spent 3 extra hours on the dyno looking for this 105/116....it just wasn't there. I removed the 57 cams and put back in the SE254E cams and the power was 99/107.
I've seen a lot of graph of the 57 with 95/110, 98/112, 94/107 in 103'' with pipes and air filter. Dave at JD's Cycle Works was one of the tuners that saw these numbers but like I said heads and more compression didn't agree with the 57.

Would the 57 be a good marriage as a bolt in a CVO 110 with std. 9.3:1?

Would the 57 be a good marriage as a bolt in a CVO 110 with std. 9.3:1?
The numbers I have seen with the 57 in a 110'' have been fair, 100/118, however the stock 255, a good pipe, and good tune will get you 90/116 so the question is; is it worth $1200.00 for cams, gaskets, labor and a tune for 10/2 more knowing the 10 hp gain happens at 6000 rpm?????
The other thing to keep in mind is even though the NUMBERS might be higher than your stock 255 cams the numbers don't show the loss of torque you will suffer at 2000 rpm to 2500rpm by getting rid of the 255's. In my opinion getting head work on your CVO 110'' motors and keep the 255's will keep the awesome torque they have at 2000 to 3000 rpm and carry that tq to the right further which will raise the horsepower leaps and bounds. I've see 110'' with 255's and head work (good pipes and good tune) at 105/125.....average at 102/122.
Now you have something to think about huh.... :confused5:

Geez Doc....now I'm totally confused! According to Andrews website the 57h cam is supposed to make torque between 2200-5600. I'm not concerned about max HP, I really want a nice flat torque curve between 2000-4500.....where I spend most of my time. Should I just stick to an exhaust system and a good tune? I figure the cams will add $250, pushrods are $170 and bearings & gaskets will add another $40-50 bucks plus labor (4.5 hours??).

There is NO cam on the market that has the tq that the 255 has at 2000 to 2700 rpm.....NONE...!!!!! They can advertise what they want but Ihaven't seen any cam come close to the low end tq of the 255. Problem with the 255 is it DIES at 3800 to 4000 rpm VERY quickly and the second problem the 255 cams make is a heat issue....they run hotter than most cams at cruise because of the cylinder pressure that make down low. (however I believe the 555 cam runs hotter that the 255's...lol)

Which cam would you use as a bolt in only?, Fullsac headpipe
& 2" CVO muffler cores, TTS fuel management.

I should be able to pickup my bike tomorrow or Wednesday and will have more info on the Andrews 57 cam. Randy's Speedwrench is installing the Fullsac Xcpipe and 2" cores from Steve. He is installing the A57 cam and dyno tuning with TTS. Randy has had good luck with this cam on several 110s. I will keep you posted with the results for my 2013 CVO Ultra Anniversary.

Thanks......I'm looking forward to your info!! If you could post a dyno sheet, that would be great. I'm really interested in seeing the torque curve.

Ok, just got back from Daytona Fl. Biketoberfest with a (rented bike), my son also graduated from WYOTECH Harley Davidson school the same week and with Honors 4.0 GPA and Perfect Attendance awards for over 12 months of training.      On with the results for your post. Picked up my bike from Speedwrench after we landed at the airport late today. I will have to post the dyno chart tomorrow or later this week. The before dyno was HP 78.90 TQ 95.69 After the tune and the post above install HP 102.76 and TQ 116.15 with a beautiful curve, no back fire, excellent throttle response, 0 to 100 is fast,     and the sound is a deep Harley rumble that is loud enough to turn heads but crusing speed I can hear my tunes. You cannot go wrong with this set up!  BTW quieten down the lifter noise and the heat.......is gone. 8)

Thanks, can't wait to see the dyno chart. I sent an email to Steve at FullSac for a quote on the install including the cam and I'm waiting to hear back from him.
