VSS
« on: October 20, 2012, 09:29:47 PM »

Friend has an '07 whose speedo has started acting erratically.  Sometimes does not work or works intermittently.  When malfunctioning the turn signals do not self cancel.  I suspect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) and seem to recall discussion that it may need to be cleaned.  The service manual says that the starter must be removed to access the VSS.  Is this correct and how should I advise him to proceed?  TIA for your help.

Yes, you have to remove the starter to access the VSS on the '07 and newer bikes - but it's only the electrical connections and the two mounting bolts --- about a 15 minute job to take it out, and another 15-20 to put it back in. No big deal.

I tried cleaning the VSS on my bike, to no avail, after my speedo started cutting out at about 6K miles... taking the turn signal cancellation and the cruise with it. I finally replaced the VSS myself for $50, and no more problems since.
