Okay boys, I'll take one for the team.
What the guys are referring to is the fact it is a very popular question that has no clear cut answer. Kind of like what oil is the best.
I think the first question you have to ask yourself is what do you want to improve upon. Have you already done a "Stage 1"? (catless headpipe and slip ons- your stock SE Ventilator AC is already high flow). Are you running a fuel tuner?
These are the basics that will noticably improve performance, sound, and reduce heat.If you have all this and feel you still want more, than I guess the cam is the next thing to look at. Thing is, the 110" is a different beast than the 90 and 103, and many have done a cam alone and have found that they lost low end torque, but gained hp at the higher RPM's- not what most want for a big heavy touring bike. Where do you want to see improved performance? Do you plan on doing more engine work in the future?
The stock SE255 cam is a good cam for down low torque, but falls off as the revs climb. There are several "drop in" cams that people are happy with- the latest and greatest flavours of the day are the new Andrews 57 and Kuryakyn (26?), as well as the Cyclerama 575, Fueling 574, Woods 555 and 777, and T Man cams.
Thing is, some of these cams need more compression to work as intended. A shortcut to that is to simply add thinner .030 head gaskets to raise compression, but to do that, the heads have to come off.I personally have the belief if the heads have to come off, then you may as well do some headwork which the 110 can really benefit from. Then if you're already in that far, you might want to pull the jugs off to re-hone the cylinders and re-ring the pistons, since that's another inherent 110 problem, etc, etc. You see where I'm going with this?
If you want more acceleration, another option that doesn't involve ripping your engine apart is a 30T gear pulley- everyone seems happy with the performance that mod offers.
Best thing is to browse the forum and do some searches, and you'll find a ton of info. Btw, since you didn't tell us much about you, I don't know what your experience and knowledge is about bikes, so no offence to your intelligence if you already know all of this
