Need advice on bushtec trailer
« on: October 24, 2012, 08:54:39 PM »

I'm almost ready to order my first Bushtec Roadstar trailer. I need help on what ad on's are worthy of adding from the factory. Also what hitch is best for my FLHTCUSE8. Thanks in advance for your help.

They'll only have two options for hitch; pin and ball.  Get the pin.  Even if you have other ball hitched towables get the pin.  It's enough better to switch the slide in part when you need to.

As for accessories on the trailer many are cute but some are really worthwhile.  Get a bra on the trailer.  Otherwise the face will get really beat up.  Get a cooler to mount on the tongue.  Really convenient and you'll love it once you start using it.  Get the little stand for the tongue.  Really nice to stand the trailer up rather than drag the tongue.  The little pouches they can stick on the interior for charger, docs, phone, whatever are very convenient.  A power point inside the trailer is very handy.  Though I don't remember if they offer that or if I just rewired from the interior light.  Lid organizer is handy too.  Though in my use not as much as I thought it might be.

Is the lighted spoiler necessary for safety as far as cars seeing the trailer better?

Any additional light on the rear is good.  2lane gave you some great ideas.  Mine is to buy better wheels.  The stock wheels can't be cleaned once dirty.  They turn a crappy grey/black over time.  Buy any of their wheels over the stock "potmetal" ones.   Learn from someone elses mistakes.

The problem is a $3000 trailer can then easily go to $5500-6000..

REDMAN, I owned two turbo II's, one with the spoiler and one without.  Didn't really like the spoiler look even with the extra lights.  My Genesis had all the extras (and still kicking myself for selling that one... :( ) but didn't really use all of them.  You are getting the Roadstar with the HD lights in the fender.  Unless John and crew at Bushtec have already changed them, you can always upgrade to the HD LED taillight assembly in each of them for much better rear visability.  Twolanerider is correct on the options he mentioned.  Although I really never used the cooler as a cooler, it was good for extra storage mainly for wet items.  I did, however, use the lid hanging bag quite a bit on the Genesis.  Don't remember if that is an option for the Roadstar or not due to the size of the lid.  DO get the pin hitch, the tongue stand and the trailer bra...all well worth the extra money.
As you stated this is your first Bushtec?  You will not be disappointed in your purchase.  I (and many others) on this site have pulled a Bushtec many miles.  My next trailer will be a Bushtec without looking at anything else.
Good luck and make sure to post some pics when you get it... :2vrolijk_21:

X2 on the wheels.  UPGRADE!

AMEN!  However, the extra's that have been mentioned all add to the Bushtec and travel experience.

REDMAN, we didn't even mention color matching...are you going that route, too?  Looks very good and while it doesn't make the Bushtec work any better, it does look good sitting behind that bike of the same color... :2vrolijk_21:

This is my first bushtec. I'm trying to order it right the first time, and with the help from the members on this site I'm sure that can be done.

I am planning on picking it up at the factory. Do you know if they install hitches there for the bike?

Yes they do.

And they are very nice there.  Not only do they make a great product, they have a great facility and customer service.  It's a family business.

An idea on the wheels.  Their stock wheels aren't anything special to look at.  In fact they're a bit ugly in comparison to other stuff you'll see.  And they are hard to keep clean.  But they're functional and the company's upgrade wheel options are expensive.  It's not something you have to do as the original wheels roll and roll and roll just fine.  It's purely a cosmetic upgrade.  There is a middle ground option though.  For a lot less money than the accessory wheels the stock wheels can be powder coated.
