Safety and Warped Rotors?
« on: October 27, 2012, 10:00:31 AM »

Friends & Riders,

Put on HD black & polished floating rotors back in FEB. B O T H are now warped after less than 5k miles.

Dealer said no warranty because they were not bought with bike. After a "conversation" -- dealer then said he wld give me the value of stock rotors but I need to pay amount above that -- plus labor of course. Of course.

QUESTION:  Bike still stops - I also have ABS.  But, warped rotors will be eating away at my pads right?

Funny - I first tried RC ROTORS to match my RC wheels but they were warped out of the box !

And so it goes. DOOF

Dealer needs to be forced to a better explanation.  While the rotors wouldn't be handled within the bike's warranty they do have a warrant of their own.  P&A pieces generally have a year warranty now.  So if bought in February there's a discussion to be had.  Dealer might ask questions about "how" they got warped.  But so long as you "yes sir, no sir, no abuse sir, no burn outs holding the front wheel sir, regular riding sir" the guy can ask all the questions he wants.

As Twolanerider noted, if you bought those rotors from a Harley dealership on or after January 1, 2012, the service part warranty is now one full year from date of purchase.  Contact H-D Customer Service and have a chat with them about the service part warranty and the poor quality of those rotors.

Must be a run of junk rotors. Getting ready to replace my third set on the 08 RK and second on my 11 SESG.

Stealers almost always get to do whatever they want. I've seen MOCO "policy" ignored by stealers for years.  There are PM rotors in my near future.  DOOF

The reason "stealers" get away with this sort of thing is because people accept being treated this way and don't fight back.  The warranty is from Harley-Davidson Motor Company, not that dealer.  If you don't want to make a phone call, so be it; ultimately it's none of my business.  Just thought I'd mention the warranty for those who aren't aware it's now a full year.

Lighten up on the personal insults and try respecting others for the equal or greater experience than yours. Anytime you want to compare "fighting back" stories with the MOCO and stealers just say the word.  DOOF

There was almost nothing directly peronsal there and absolutely nothing that I'd perceive as insult.  In fact he made a patently obvious statement.

There is a warranty.  Dealers may try to avoid it.  Choosing to allow them (dealers) to do this is up to you.

Mentioning the warranty at all was a gesture done entirely for your benefit on the chance you might not have been aware.  Nothing more and nothing less since HD's policy on this did change.

Whether you allow the dealer the freebie is, as Jerry said, entirely your call.  Though, for what it's worth, it's not without impact on others.  A dealer that gets away with it once is more likely to try screwing over the next guy too.  That next guy could be any one of us.

2LANE -- u don't get to decide what I consider an insult.  Although, its clear you do have license to "get the last word" on this forum, right?  Besides, this post was about SAFETY and warped rotors -- NOT ABOUT WARRANTY.  DOOF

Obviously someone recently chit in your Cheerios.  No insult was intended, but I guess some people aren't happy unless they find something to argue about.  I'm happy I was able to give you an opportunity to go off about something so you can move on.

As I said, it's none of my business if you want to let that dealer jerk your chain or not.  I mentioned what I did not just for your edification but for all the others reading the thread.  If you didn't want comments, you shouldn't have started the thread.  And severely warped rotors can be a safety concern since they impact stopping and control.  I would have thought that was pretty obvious.

Jerry, I didn't know the guy was a dick (see, now he's actually been insulted).  We should just talk to each other and leave the Doofus alone.

So, what'd you think of the Tiger's performance this past week?  I mean, seriously, talk about running on some warped rotors?  They were all over the track.  It's too bad for them those no warranty in post-season play.

You think so Brian?  I'm sure if we tried hard we could do it faster.  I vaguely remember an old game show, something like "Name that Song" or "What's that Song" or something like that.  The players would say "I can name that song in "X number" of notes!"  Then they jump and down in excitement, pee themselves, some guy off state with a piano would play two or three notes, then they'd stand there looking stupid because there was no way they could name some dumb-ass song in two or three notes.  I bet, if we tried hard, and Doofus did his part, we could trash a thread in two posts!
