Garmin not finding music
« on: October 28, 2012, 09:49:09 AM »

This was mentioned in the Saddle Bags Falling off thread so I thought I start a new one to find out how many people are having problems with their Garmins.  My Zumo 660 does not find any music and I have to pull the battery and reset the unit.  It'll then be fine for awhile. Anybody else having problems finding the MP3 files on the Zumo?  Does anybody know when there will be a fix from Garmin?  It's getting to be a pain the the A#$.

While I've not done this enough times to deem it a fix or even a reliable workaround, I have found that it seems to be a memory issue.  When I clear my tracklog, it seems to help it for a long period of time.

I rarely have this issue because I usually save and clear my log every day, but on a recent trip, I got out of the habit.  As the track log built up and used memory, the mp3 app didin't have as much to work with.  When I saved and cleared it as a daily habit, it didn't give me any issues.  Same thing happened later in the summer, and the track log was very deep again, so I cleared it and returned to issue free operation.

This workaround has been disputed on another forum, but it worked form me, so I pass it along as a suggestion only.

If you try it, let us know your results.

My Garmin is collecting dust on the shelf.  I completely disconnected it, wired in a powered USB socket and use my phone for GPS and MP3 player.  I just wish the vehicle aka navigation dock for the Droid Bionic was more secure so I could just leave it on.

I have a 16 GB micro SD card in mine for music files and it does the same thing.  I contacted Garmin and they told me they were aware of this problem and advised me to keep watching their site for a software update.  If if you go to MYGARMIN with the Zumo plugged in to your computer, click on the Dashboard tab and it will tell you if there are software updates available.  Note...this is different from Map updates.  I don`t have to take the battery out,  I just have to turn it off and restart it, sometimes several times for it to see my music files.

I have this same problem.....interesting about the tracking log.....I will try it.

Typically, when this happens.....I will take the battery out and upon reboot it will find the MP3.....once it is working... I will not shut the unit down until the end of the day..

This is a complete pain in the a$$

I've been doing the same thing.  I just leave it on all day.  I wish they'd come out with a fix!!

Is it collecting dust because of the MP3 issue?  Other than that I do like the unit.  I also have my cell phone paired with it.  Of course nobody can hear me going down the road, but I can hear them fine.

We have 2 2012 Convertibles and 1 of the 660s had the same issue you describe. The problem 660 eventually totally crapped out - wouldn't even power up.

I returned the problem 660 to the dealer who sent it back to Garmin. A replacement unit came back within 2 weeks and it had the same map set on it as the returned one. The MP3 files had to be reloaded on the 660.

I would recommend having your dealer do the same thing.

So, did it fix the MP3 issue?  Mine works fine except once in awhile it can't find any MP3 files.  I've had it over a year so I don't know if it's under warranty.  I purchased it as an accessory because I have a 2010.

If it is a Road Tech unit from a H-D dealer it should have a two year warranty.  If it is not a Road Tech version then just a one year warranty. However several years ago Garmin replaced my Street Pilot 2720 that was several months put of warranty.

a common issue is the 660 (any version) beeing unable to read from SD from time to time. We realise this more often in Europe as most of us have their maps on SD too as the size of all Europe exceeded the intermal memory already some time ago. Usually restarting the unit by turning it off/on once or twice does the job. Exchanging the make/size of the SD for some did it too.

Yea...you don't have to go through your dealer for the warranty.  Mine flaked out on me and I dealt directly with Garmin and got a replacement unit in 7-10 days.  Doesn't hurt anything to go through the dealer, but it just delays the process a bit, and they probably cover the shipping to Garmin.  I just prefer dealing with the horses mouth rather than the other end, which is where some HD dealers reside.

I noticed today that Garmin issued a firmware update for the Zumo 660.  Hopefully this will correct this problem.  I did the update and time will tell....
