Road Tech 660 wiring on COV Road Glide
« on: October 28, 2012, 11:56:35 AM »

I just got the Road Tech GPS for my 2013 CVO Road Gide Custom and I'm trying to figure out the easiest way to wire it in to my bike. Any suggestions?

Mount the GPS and run the main cable off the mount into the front fairing. Take power from the cigarette lighter. Run the audio output from the GPS. To the Auxiliary Input on the front of the radio. You will need a 3.5 mm male stereo to 3.5 mm male stereo cable for this. You are set to go. The radio must be in the AUX mode to hear. If you want to have the ability to make and take phone calls look at the HD-Bomm. Do a search on this site for it or go to www.hdbomm.com.

Things get a bit more complicated with the NIM if you are using one.

Great thanks for the reply back. Never owned a Road Glide, Can I take off only the inner faring easily and tie into the lighter?

You would take the outer fairing off.  There are six screws holding it on.  It's kind of a bitch to get back on until you figure out how to hold your mouth right.  Just cover the fender with a towel or something when removing the outer fairing...just in case.  Of course, you'll have to unplug the headlights and the turn signals as well.

The method bissjim recommended is by far the easier road to travel for getting the functions of the GPS unit only, the downside being that you have to have the radio set to the AUX mode to hear the turn prompts, so unless you have MP3's on the GPS, you'll not be able to play music in the AUX mode.

The more complicated option is to get the HD handlebar mounting kit, the NIM, and do some minor wiring changes.  The NIM is kind of flakey though...it will allow the Garmin Roadtech 660 (not the regular Garmin 660) to interrupt the radio and give you turn prompts, no matter what mode the radio is in.  The NIM comes standard on the Ultra models of the CVO's, but not the RG Custom, or the SG bikes.  It can be done, though the HD catalog says that it can't.  HD, in their infinite wisdom, put a slightly different wiring harness on the non Ultra CVO bikes that has to be modified to connect up to the NIM correctly.  Bissjim can help you out with the details of the whole NIM installation...he is more knowledgable about all that than anyone else I know of.

Send me an email and I will send you a word file that shows how to remove the fairing. The file is to large to post here because of the pictures. Or maybe it is because I just have not figured how to post directions with pictures yet.

My 09 SERG I had mine set up running though the Aux jack, it worked but you could not use radio or CD if you wanted music interrupt for driving directions.

So on my 12 SERGC I added the NIM, wired all the GPS through the bars, modified the Nim / bike harness per the instructions on this site.  Well worth the extra work, and money.  I can listen to my IPOD, and the GPS will interrupt it with directions.

Wishing there was a way to do the same with my soon to be new CVO Road king as it has the Ipod and amp, but no head unit.
