The animal commonly called buffalo in the U.S. is actually bison. Buffalo and bison have different physical characteristics, habitats, life span and temperament. Buffaloes are found in Africa and south Asia while bison roam in North and South America. So now you have all learned something today. Anyway, I rode through the bison herds in Custer State Park in July. Before I went, I watch a bunch of videos on YouTube and the one in particular that I remember was a bison head-butting a bike from the side. The bike was just slammed to the ground. It was incredible. Luckily, it threw the biker quite a distance from the bike, or he would have been crushed by the force. I was pretty scared of riding through there after seeing that video. I was happy that my trip through the park was quite uneventful and we were able to stop and watch the bison herd cross without bothering anybody. I thought the burros down the road a bit was really cool. There were 20-some of them just hanging out along the road begging for food. We stopped, along with many others, to feed them and pet them. They are very smart and if you don't have food in your hand, they will walk away to look for someone else. But the coolest thing was when we walked into the Full Throttle Saloon. My friend's girlfriend was posing for a picture with a burro standing inside just below the stuffed bison they had in there. Until I told her that I think he's alive, she thought that he was stuffed too...until he moved his leg. It turns out that he was just in there standing in front of a big fan trying to cool off in 100+ temps.
