Many of the other drivers were just minding their own business, but got caught in the maelstrom.
Red light running is getting worse by the day here in the Bay Area. Not sure about other places, but it's endemic here. There is an intersection close to Stanford Campus, where a light has been put on cycle, rather than using the sensors, so we sit for a few minutes, with no traffic. PG&E is replacing old gas lines on the main road, so until construction is finished, we have to wait for the cycle. Two out of three times, people actually go around me and run the light turning onto Campus Drive. This really p@SSe$$ me off. Light's are not optional and are there for a reason.
Every day I see someone shoot through an intersection just as my light turns green, knowing it's unlikely we'll be pulling out that quick. Six years ago I broadsided an idiot in a tool-bed truck that did that, but didn't take into account I was already moving at 25-30 MPH approaching the intersection. This was right in front of AT&T Stadium. It nearly totaled my Lexus and messed up my neck. His insurance paid me off.
I am very circumspect entering any intersection anytime, slow down and watch to make sure some nutcase isn't flying into it, just as I enter.
My biggest concern is getting rear ended on the bike. I've added brighter LED lighting and am going to be placing an LED Light-bar under the tour pak just as soon as it arrives. The one I have now flashes four times before coming on steady. Thanks to Bright-ass tail lights! If I'm sitting at the intersection and someone is approaching, I always let go of the lever and run it through the cycle just one more time to make sure they see me. I take nothing for granted, ever.
I wish all safe travels.
