2013 110 reliability
« on: November 03, 2012, 08:03:19 AM »

Hi Guys and Girls. I am new to Harley and have a CVO RK on order with a due date of May 2013......long wait, ahhhhhhhhh

Anyway there seems to be a lot of critical comments about the 110 heads warping and leaking oil. Additionally the timing chain seems to attract big criticism as it fails at 15,000 miles blah, blah.

Has the 110 engine been modified to eliminate these issues?

What is the view out in Harley World, you all must be riding bikes with exchange engines?

Should I just get the smaller and standard engine........I have a torque addiction by the way.

Any help appreciated

Usually the only people who talk bad about the 110" engine are the ones that don't have one and really want one. 48,000 miles on 2010 CVO Ultra, never a problem. Just bought a 2013 CVO Ultra and looking forward to more trouble free miles.

Both issues you describe are essentially old news.  Back in 2007/2008, the MOCO had an issue with leaking head gaskets, which has been resolved.  Cam/crank chain tensioner wear was an issue in years prior to 2007...

The only reliability issue that I would have continued concern of would be lifters.  Many have experienced premature lifter wear/failure.  Many choose to replace the stock MOCO lifters with superior aftermarket lifters...

My 2009 SERG just turned 30,000 miles with no issues (knock on wood). Lifters are even more quiet since I switched to Redline Oil, and regular Seafoam treatment in the engine oil 100 miles before oil changes.

My 2011 has been reliable (19,000 miles) except for a bad compensator sprocket assembly.

The wife and I are just now coming back from a trip to Florida. Sitting on the beast for the 1,300+ miles so far my only concern is the knocking noises you get from the motor at certain rpms. Mid 2000 RPM knocks more than High 2000 RPM down the highway. I tend to find myself running about 78 or 80 (right around 3000 RPM) without looking. It's a nice sweet spot. Then again I seem to have another about 90 mph.

A little twist of the throttle while running down the highway can get you in trouble pretty quick. The cam in the 110's is a real puller. The more I run this bike down the highway the more I love this cam.

at least since 09 the 110 does not seem to be significantly more vulnerable to the usual Harley problems than the 96 or 103 are.

65K in 2010 SEUC.  Pulls hard, uses "no" oil. Added 1/2 qt at about 3K from oil change last time.

Replaced compensator and alternator, all under warranty.

Torque?  You won't be disappointed.  I have an '08 CUSE with 78,000 miles on the clock.  I have had, however, my share of problems.  I'm now on my 3rd compensator and 2nd set of lifters.  Had a oil filter adapter gasket leak early on.  No other oil leaks whatsoever.  My '08 got the latest gasket revision at assembly in May'08 at the factory (just by 3 weeks I was told).  So no gasketing issues other than that oil filter adapter.  My advice is to get the Extended Service Plan to provide warranty coverage after the 2 year warranty expires.  My plan expires in June, 2013 so I'll be looking at the 2014 CVO real hard, although I see no other features that draw me to upgrade, except the GPS (08 built-in navigation system was crap - I mounted my Garmin Streetpilot on the bars and use it instead).
I hate to leave the '08 frame and tires.  I drove the new frame model and wasn't impressed.  Moreover, I like the mileage I get from the '08 setup....front tire goes over 20,000 miles (one went 23,000).
I'd say go for it - you'll love it!

I have a 2013 CVO Ultra with 4,000 miles on her. Runs better than my 2010 CVO Street Glide.
