Quick tip for moving detachable tour paks rearward on '09+ bikes
« on: November 04, 2012, 07:52:46 AM »

Hey guys,

I'm sure someone will inform me that this has already been posted, but I didn't find it in my many searches.  So hopefully this will help someone out.

I put a detachable king tour pak on my SESG, just as I have on my previous bikes, but instead of using a sundowner seat/SG stitched backrest (like my other SG), I went with the CVO Ultra seat setup with the adjustable tour pak backrest.

The seat looks great on the bike, is nice and comfy, and the heat rocks.  Problem is, with the girlfriend on the back, it had noticeably less room than my other bike.  To the point that it was very uncomfortable.  I had heard similar complaints from CVO Ultra owners, who had all recommended George Anderson's tour pak relocation bracket.

Now, there are two sets of holes in the bottom of the new tour paks, so they can be mounted in either of two locations, about 1" different from each other.  Even with mine in the forward holes (rearmost tour pak position) I still felt like I needed at least another inch.

I looked into the GA bracket, but didn't like that it moved the tour pak up higher....what I felt was a considerable amount.  I contacted Kevin at DK Custom Products about their much lower profile relocation bracket, because some of the information on their site was misleading.  He informed me that while I could buy his bracket, it really wasn't necessary, as the detachable tour pak mount allows the pak to be moved rearward if you are willing to drill a couple of holes.

I originally thought that I would have to move it much farther back, because of the round molded ridge in the bottom of the tour pak needing to be completely behind the rear cross brace in the tour pak mount.  Upon further inspection, I realized that the forward ridge of the tour pak can actually perfectly straddle that rear cross brace on the mount perfectly, as it would on the round bar found on the Ultras.  I removed my tour pak, and marked the inside 1-5/8" forward of the forewardmost rear holes (hopefully that makes sense).  I drilled new holes in those two locations, then bolted the tour pak back to the bracket.  Once I made sure it was square and centered on the bracket, I drilled through the existing forwardmost front holes into the tour pak mount, and placed my bolts through those new holes.  Obviously, if you're doing this while mounted on the bike, you'll want to place something under the tour pak above the fender to keep from messing your paint up with the drill.

The results are exactly what i wanted.  The new tour pak position is PERFECT, and with the thicker CVO Ultra backrest, you don't even notice a gap between the seat and tour pak.

Sorry the post is so long winded, but That's the best I could explain it.  Save yourself some cash, and you can do this mod in about 15 minutes.  Bear in mind that this is for detachable mounts only.

I'll post pictures of the new hole locations, an underside shot, and a shot from above once I fly back to Kansas City on Wednesday.  If anyone has any questions on the process, just let me know.

I put the George Anderson kit on yesterday.  Easy to put on and works great. He's a really nice guy too. Shipped fast too.  :2vrolijk_21:

I'm sure it was, it is, he is, and he did.....but you seem to have missed the point of this thread.  I saved that $200, the additional height, and the time waiting for shipment.  Not saying there's anything wrong with George's kit, or anyone else's.  Just pointing out that it's not necessary on a quick detach tour pak, and provided a quick and cheap solution that looks stock.

I see that now,.   I didn't have to drill any holes.   Bolted it right on and in. I only use my TP when I travel or put my wife on the back.  Most of the time it's off.   I paid 185 with shipping.  Thought it was totally worth it.  Came in 2 days

George Anderson kit is necessary for the SEUC tour pack, as it cannot be easily relocated.  Add on TPs do not have the same issues.
