2006-07 Leather Tour Pak
« on: November 04, 2012, 08:15:03 AM »

Are the 06-07 leather tour paks really smaller than the newer models or are they just shaped differently?

When you say newer models do you mean King Tour Pak? If so, yes, the 06-07 CVO was smaller. To gain a little more room I removed the liners, but that added little. Donna and I pack very well and never had a problem. We can do a few day ride with the chopped, but when gone for a week or more we use the king, with plenty of room for new shirts or?

Having had both I would say yes. I do recall that in 2006 a salesman told me they held the same displacement.....in ping-pong balls. That of course is NOT the same as usable space. I think they had to add the top "hump" to gain those displacement numbers. I can say without a doubt that I cannot fit the same amount of stuff in my '06 leather tourpack as my old Ultra.

Now having said that, I like the leather one. It was available for only two years, 06 and 07. And while many removed it as soon as they could, I'm keeping mine as it was one of the things that made the 06 and 07 different from the other CVO Ultras.  And I have grown to like the looks.

Can't wait to get home and get mine back Dave!

How did they measure the ping pong balls in the lid portion? We're they standard or competition sized balls?

Obviously I like the leather tour pak as well, and I agree with you that it makes the 06 and 07 CVO Ultras unique and that was the primary reason I bought my 07.  I was a Road King rider for a number of years and never thought about going to an Electra Glide. When the 06 CVO Ultra came out with the leather tour pak, it started to grow on me and when the 07s came out with the 110-cu. in. engine, I was totally convinced it was time to make the switch.  Sure, the leaking rear cylinder was a hassle until H-D solved the issue and I've had to add a few upgrades, such as the SE compensator, Bagger Brace, IDS, XiEDs and Bub 7 slip-ons, but none of the newer CVOs have swayed me to get rid of my 07.  The reason for my original post was that some of my riding buddies swear that their hard tour pak is much larger than mine.  I'm not convinced that volumetrically there's much of a difference, but I will admit that the shape of the leather tour pak limits the amount of gear you can stow in it.  I'm a solo rider and when I go on extended rides, I strap a piece of soft luggage to the passenger seat and I can pack for a week or more.

They were black and orange Screaming Eagle ping-pong balls.

I don't know how they did the measuring, I'm just recalling what the salesman told me. Maybe they shoved them through the holes where the speakers and wires ran. Maybe they bored a hole in the bottom. Maybe the salesman was full of it and made it up.

And that brings me to my next question.....

"How many CVO members does it take to fill a tourpack with ping-pong balls?"

In 2005 when I got mine I thought the leather was odd looking, but it grew on me. I came to love the look and uniqueness of it and the fact that it set the bike apart from others, Damn Right It's A CVO!

Having owned both, I'd say the leather TP holds less.  Whether that's a volume thing or the way it's built, I don't know.  But I honestly think it's slightly smaller.  I loved the look of it on my '06, especially after putting a light bar for brakelights on it.  I've traveled with a BSR for up to 10 days on the '06 and didn't have a storage problem, but I did have a Kury roll type bag on the luggage rack and kept things I needed to get to quickly in it, along with a waterproof stuffsack that held our raingear, which was also bungied to the rack.

The only negative thing about the leather TP is it has limited visibility from the rear, but the Custom Dynamics LED strip light fixes that issue.

I was concerned about rear end visability as well, so I have three cateye LED flush mount lights mounted to the back of my Tour Pak.  All three act as running and brake lights while the left and right are turn indicators as well.  They weren't cheap but the confidence of being seen was worth it.  I also have the H-D LED tail light so they have a uniform look.

I have the leather on my 06 SEUC and it's definitely smaller. Great looking for sure, but not only is it smaller, but the size it has is a little less efficient as well.  the worse thing is the angle and size of the rack.  Using luggage is tougher as it tips the front edge of the bag up, and it catches wind much more easily.

I was thinking of adding some extra lighting also. I would love to see some pics of the additonal lighting ideas.

My '06 is up at Metal Dragon. I'm having HD-Dude add some additional lights in the rear. I forget what kind they are, but I know they brighten up the whole back end. I was tempted to do the lights across the tourpack, but could not bring myself to cut into the leather.

I'll post some pics when I pick up the bike in mid December.

There are several threads in the 2006 SE Ultra section about increasing rear lighting. At the time the Custom Dynamics light bar was very popular as Midnight Rider has already mentioned. Most got the red LED lens but I got the clear lens with red bulbs. It was very visible to those behind me.
Here is a daytime shot of mine :
