Engine takes a chit
« on: November 06, 2012, 10:46:10 AM »

Riding last Saturday and took my '07 CUSE2 out for a little exercise.  Coming home I began to hear what I at first thought was perhaps an exhaust leak.  Stopped for an inspection and could find nothing but had a definite strange noise.  I thought it was coming from the primary area but my buddy who was riding with me thought from the front cylinder perhaps.  Definitely hard to pinpoint and my hearing is not all that good anyway.  It really did not sound metallic and I really couldn't describe it a knocking at that time.  I thought about the lifter problems I've been reading about but it did not make any type of chirpping or squeaking noise as I've heard these problems described.  Engine had normal oil pressure and was running OK so I decided to continue.

Well I did not get far at all when I noticed a definite loss of power like it was running on only one cylinder.  Then I began to hear what sounded like popping noises with even more loss of power.  I looked for a safe place to pull off the busy four lane highway and as I pulled into the parking lot the engine died.  My friend said he saw a puff of black smoke from each muffler as I pulled off the road.

Engine would not restart so we trailered it to the dealer Sunday morning.  Not heard anything yet from the dealer but I am almost positive I have a catastrophic (or should I say harleystrophic) engine failure.  Bike has 83k miles on it but this engine is just shy of 60k miles since the original had to be replaced.

Still under ESP thank goodness.  But I am thinking I may take the dollars ESP will pay and apply that to a factory reman on the engine.  Anyone have any experience with the Harley reman?  I don't think the moco does it in house but sends it out to a third party vendor.  Anyone know who that might be and their reputation?

I thought that I had heard S&S was contracted to do HD's rebuilds. I would call S&S and ask them to be sure.

Thanks.  If that is correct I would feel pretty good about it.   :2vrolijk_21:

You are correct.  Thanks.   :2vrolijk_21:  S&S did confirm that they do the moco reman but you have to go thru an authorized dealer for the moco program and warranty, of course.

I see that S&S has the 124" HSU (hot set up) which they can install for not all that much more than the moco reman.  Wondering if anyone has any experience with this engine build.

I have no personal experience with their 124, but have spoken with a couple of guys who are running them in pre '07 bikes. They have no complaints, and one of the guys has in the neighbor hood of 20,000 miles on his, says he doesn't abuse it, but doesn't baby it either. Gets 42 to 45 mpg, and has more get up and go than he needs. He has it in a Dyna.

I'm running a 107 in my SG, but will be building a 124 in the next year or so for it from the ground up. I'll base most of it from the S&S build formula.

By the way, S&S has a 12 month warranty on their 124, HD does not have one on their 120r.

Wow that sucks to hear, at least on your 07 you have black cases so you can go with either a motor replacement without too much worry.

Yes S&S is doing the reman, but I thought I was told dealer cost on the 124 is around 5295 most are selling them for 6295 or there abouts.    Haven't checked into it lately but I thought remans were like 2500-3000.

We have a client with a 124" S&S engine that broke an inner valve spring.........................at 80,000 miles, no real harm was incurred, but it did have a noise, being the reason we took a peek at it.

Jeez Ultra......

Between the '07 and now this one, how many Harley engines have you gone through?
It's a good thing we love these bikes so much when they are running right because when they are broken, they sure are easy to hate!

I'd be tempted to take some ESP money and go to the aftermarket if that was a possibility.

May you get your knees in the breeze ASAP.

Reman on the 110s is $4,195.  Ouch.   :'(

Brad, this is the engine on my '07 CUSE2 - which looks an awful lot like your bike!   :D  The first engine (one of the 110 beta engines no doubt, lol) took a chit at a little under 24k miles.  The valve guide on the rear cylinder exhaust valve dropped down preventing the valve from closing and then the piston hitting it.  Moco stepped up and sent a new engine which after sever iterations to cure the '110 problems' it finally got the ultimate fix from the moco and has been perfect since until this happened.

I have my '12 CUSE7 with 13k miles on it to ride so no problem there.   :2vrolijk_21:

Wondering if anyone has personal experience with the S&S 124" HSU.  I don't want a monster that is not streetable at normal speeds and in normal driving.  I know at Ribfest Hogbreath was telling me that the Jim's 120" is his yellow Road Glide was a monster that is not happy unless it is being wound out and running hard.  Not good for long distance touring with my lovely BSR I don't think.  May be more than I can deal with.

This is really new dont think there are that many out there yet, but maybe someone has played with it.   I have the 124 S&S regular motor and love it 40k miles on the motor now :)   I just dont sit in traffic with it.

We've installed/machined for the Hot Set-Ups on many occasions.
Not an uncontrolled monster by any means,(they can be, although) as the .640 cam gives you time to adjust your shorts before they light up.
Bore your cases, and install a Timken conversion kit, address the heads, and get a good throttle body on there of appropriate flow rate, have it tuned, and away you go.
