What exactly "re-man"?  I've never read about them or researched them.  They're not new, they're rebuilt, right?  By S&S I think I've heard.  I wonder what is new in a re-man motor.  I would assume valves, seals, bearings...  I wonder what acceptable crank runout is in a re-man motor.  I don't have any opinion pro or con - I'm just curious...

Scott, Not much to 're-man' on this motor.  Crankcase is toast from damage to cam bearing bore and lifter bore.  Flywheel is also - there is noticeable resistance and grinding noise when moving it.  So for all practical purposes I will get a new engine as they will have to replace these parts.  And yes, S&S does the re-man for the moco - I confirmed that.

So if anything is salvagable from your motor, those parts will be used, and any non salvagable parts will be replaced with new parts...   

I had a mental image of a shelf full of rebuilt motors, and if yours is toast, you get one of those.  But from your description, it sounds as that is not the case.

You have my attention.  Mine is an '05 SEEG - 35K with the same cams and "Stock" lifters.  Mobil-1 Synthetic.  It looks like your lifters failed??  If this is the case, I'm thinking a change may be in order for mine.

There is a lot of talk (and angst) about which lubricants to use, whether to perform one's own services, etc.  I am happy to report that when ESP inspected my engine failure and approved its repair the question of lubricant and services never came up.  I perform my own services and my '07 has never had a major service performed at the dealer.  During the early 110 debacles with leaking head gaskets, moving cylinder sleeves, etc.,  I think I may have had the dealer change the oil once when it was in for repair.  But that is it.

So while I cannot speak with universal authority in my experience these are not issues.  And, I have had ESP inspections of engine problems on three different Harleys.  

Perhaps because my service manager and tech know me so well they could speak with authority about my maintenance.  I don't know.  While I do like these guys it is a shame I had to get to know them so well due to the myriad of problems I have had with every Harley I have owned.

This post is all to familiar as I had the very same failure while on a trip through Yellowstone this past summer.  I posted the event over on HD Forums. The front cam bearing failed exatly the same way and took out the motor. I highly reccomend Timken bearings on any builds.

Jerry, any news on your reman motor?

Last checked on it about a week ago.  They told me the motor was on order but no additional information.  If I don't hear anything by the end of the week I'll check on it again.  Thanksgiving holiday may have slowed things down a bit.

the right lifter survived another appr. 100 m after starting a similar sound as a loose belt or dry muffler mount and therefore was ignored first hand:





no other damage except corresponding wear on the cam.

Bike is finished - well except for clean up.  Delayed about ten days because had to get new inner primary (a chrome one) as bolt holes were stripped on the one on it.  It has been off several times over the years - guess those soft aluminum threads can only take so much.

I had them install new clutch plates on my dime since I was still running the orignals with 83k on them.  Work order shows that they billed ESP a little over $6 grand for the motor, inner primary, gaskets, fluids, labor, etc.  I've definitely gotten my monies work on the ESP over the last six years.

Tech has test ridden it several times to make sure everything is A-OK.  Said it runs real good and strong.

I plan to pick it up on Sunday.  I'm riding tomorrow.  Thanks goodness I have a spare.

Was the engine equipped with Timken bearings when it failed?  How many failures will it take for HD to realize its cheaper to make the upgrade than eat a motor?
