Oil Change on New Bike Before Storage
« on: November 07, 2012, 03:39:35 PM »

Generally this would be a no-brainer, but here is my situation: I have to travel about 150 miles to pick up the new Breakout that I am buying and there is a good chance I will have to ride it back instead of haul it in a trailer. My question is: Should I change the oil on it before putting it into storage for the winter. In other words it might have approximately 150 miles on it before storage.  Thanks for any advice.

Absolutely no need and no benefit to changing the oil with 150 miles on the bike.  I'm sure we will hear from a few of the folks stuck back in the 50's when cars and bikes didn't have real oil filters, but there is no mountain of machining trash and other junk floating around in a modern engine, or even a semi-modern engine like a Harley.  And modern motor oils will neutralize any minor amount of acid that might develop due to condensation in the oil from those 150 miles of use.

What I would suggest is to clean the bike well and dry it thoroughly with forced air before covering it for the winter (assuming you plan to cover it), then hook up a Battery Tender.

No, unless......

Unless you're one of the overly anal exceedingly attentive types who changes the initial oil at just several hundred miles anyway.  If so then  do it and be ready to go in the spring; but only if you're that anal attentive.

Yes, but you must buy the oil from me at $100 a quart plus shipping and handling. :drink:

No x1001...Besides you may want to get it out a couple times before spring arrives just for a scoot around the block or 2 or 3....

Thanks everyone, that definately sums it up for me (by the way, it looks like I will have a covered trailer for saturday so the question hopefully becomes a moot point).

No you do not need to change the oil with 150 miles on it before storing for the winter......but do make sure when you shut her down that the motor and exhaust are up to full operating temperature (for moisture burn off).  If you must start it while in storage to get your Harley sound fix in, again make sure everything is up to full operating temp before you shut her down.

No you do not need to change the oil with 150 miles on it before storing for the winter......but do make sure when you shut her down that the motor and exhaust are fully up to full operating temperature (moisture burn off).  If you must start it while in storage to get your Harley sound fix in, again make sure everything is up to full operating temp before you shut her down.

X2 on that.  Hey, I did that this morning riding into work at 31 degrees... :2vrolijk_21:

All funny business aside, it's also a good idea to move the bike around a bit (even ride it down the street/driveway) while you are heating it up for operating temps.  Helps keep everything "loobed" during those long, cold winter months in Illiniois.  Or, you could just move South... ;D

That last part was mean....I'm sorry.  Lord, forgive me.
