Tour pack scratch
« on: November 08, 2012, 11:01:12 PM »

Some jackass put a DEEP scratch above my lock (which I have NEVER used thanks the the power locks)on my tour pack. The dealer tried to buff it out, but it goes down to the plastic. I was quoted from the body shop the dealer recommended $280 to paint the top of the tour pack. He originally said it would cost $180, but the added cost was the price of paint from HD.

Questions:

1) Does $280 seem fair to paint the top of the tour pack? Seems a bit steep to me.

2) Does owning a CVO with limited paint increase the cost of the paint by $100, or is this a body guy seeing $$$ because it is a CVO?

Thought please.

Thanks

My guess is that the dealer marked up to send the part off to a paint shop.

Perhaps the comprehensive coverage of your insurance will pay for it.

Price seems pretty reasonable to me especially if it includes removal and reinstallation of the top. Most shop rates are near $100 per hour and paint shop labor isn't cheap either. Might save a few bucks if you removed it yourself.

Fortunately the T-P lid is normally just one color, so you don't have to deal with multiple colors and graphics which would inflate the cost rapidly.  As for the cost of the actual paint, I haven't a clue since I've never seen true CVO restricted paint available for sale from a dealership.  But considering the company involved, it wouldn't surprise me to find a big premium charged for the "special" paint if in fact they would sell it to you.

If you really want to know the real scoop, you'll need to find an industry insider who is willing to tell you the truth about both the availability of the real official paint and the pricing.  Good luck.  Try a PPG distributor, since Harley buys their paint from PPG last time I looked.  As for the price quoted by that shop, sure it seems a little steep considering the small area involved.  And a good painter could just do a small spot repair.  But a good repair takes time and talent, and $280 really isn't all that much these days ASSUMING you get a first class top quality repair.

While this certainly chaps no doubt I try (sometimes unsuccessfully I admit) to put things in perspective and look at the bigger picture.  For example what does $280 equate to?  Perhaps two days on the road if you are VERY frugal.  Most decent motels with taxes and fees are going to run $75 and in the northeast I have paid $150+ per nite for what I can get back home at half that price.  Then there is food and fuel.  Yet when we are having fun we don't think $280 is all that much.  I know, I know it is just a mind game but sometimes it helps me get past it.

And as Jerry (grc) said you do want a first class job.  Otherwise your eye will be drawn to the affected area every time you approach your bike.  Good luck and hope you get it resolved to you satisfaction soon.   :2vrolijk_21:

You get what you pay for, and if you traded the bike with the scratch showing, they would ding you twice that much. And you would still be pizzed every time you opened the lid and looked at it. When you stop and remember what you spent for the bike, $300 to make it right again isn't that bad, it's just a shame that people are jealous and do things like that.

Glenn, Ultrafxr has a point.  You haven't stated his yet but have you checked with your insurance company?  Would be worth a try to help offset any costs depending on your deductable.

X3  Remember the painter is not just slapping a coat of paint on it.  He'll have to work the scratch out so it won't show through the finish coats, prime, paint with 2 stage paint, probably color sand the base coat, then paint with a 2 stage clear top coat, maybe color sand the clear and then buff.  $280 is very reasonable for a top quality job.

Jerry

I have inquired about painting a Hoppe Fairing formy 03 SERK frommy local Indy and he is very very good.
His cost for a half pint of PPG to match is $80.  He is asking a total of $500 to match the paint scheme of my 03 SERK on a Hoppe Fairing. If I wanted just the centennial gold, it would be $300.
So I would say they are in the ball park at $180 and change.

I've had decent luck blending small scratches with the air brush.  Only brave enough to try it in areas not in direct view.  After working the scratch and blend and paint and clear it still takes awhile; but it's cheap.  I'd not do it on a fairing or obvious area of a tour pak lid though.  Someone with actual skills might.  But that's not me.

Glencarp, any chance we could see a picture of what the scumbag did to your machine. I go a lot of places where there is a lot of security and I will be spending the night. I know I really don't have to put a cover on my bike, but I do it just for this reason. CAHDBIKER

Here she is.

I have a $500 deductible. I don't think this was done intentionally, I was at a biker weeding and the bride and groom asked that some of the MC brothers line up their bikes to create and isle in a field and I left the bike there where people were walking by all day. Who knows.

Thanks for all the feed back and I now realize that the $280 is well worth the aggravation I'd get EVERY time I walked past a patch job I did, or had someone else do!
