Service charge variances between dealers
« on: August 31, 2006, 03:34:57 PM »

Yes, I am still alive and riding, just thought you would all want to get on this bandwagon.
Decided to have a 10k workup done on both bikes,(one is at 15k, but thought it was better late than never) since I do most of my own work.  I checked with the local dealer, and it would have been almost $900!  Called the dealer in Vernal Utah, (just a nice putt over the pass from me) and both bikes........ about $375 total!!! [smiley=confused5.gif]  Guess where I am going to have it done.  By the way, this dealership now charges $150 for a non-synthetic oil change and primary change.  That figures out to about $100 in labor for a 20 minute job.  How many other horror stories are there out there?

I'm curious what the going rate at the dealers are for a SYN3 oil, filter, primary and transmission change?

Bumpus Memphis is usually around $240 to $250 for a 5,000 or 10,000 mile service with Syn3.

Big B;
You can easily see the front tensioner by removing the cam cover. The rear is very difficult to see but you can get to part of it with a small mirror. You are correct though in order to do a "complete" inspection of the tensioners you would need to pull the cam plate. The rear is the one that usually wears out first.

Jim.....I've not had much luck checking the rear either with a mirror.  Some of the shops say you can, but I can never get a look at the top outside corners, which is where they seem to fail first.  I think one of the best ways (other than pulling the cam plate) is to cut the oil  filter and take a look at the actual amount of plastic floating around the system.  I don't worry much about some fine specs, but when I find "divots" in the filter it's time to pull it apart.  Way too much for me to keep up with.  Plastic out and gear drives in.  End of problem.

If someone did actually go to the trouble of pulling it apart to look at everything why would you make that just an inspection?  If you've already done that much wouldn't you have to repace the plastic (at the very least) while you're there?  It's a relatively cheap expense against a fair amount of time.  Should just be preventative maintenance if you're pulling it apart anyway.
