What RPM and gear do you find the best
« on: November 18, 2012, 08:20:53 PM »

On my ride recent ride 2 up, being the longest ride so far I found I was in 6th gear most the time, sitting on 2300/2500 RPM some times down to 2000 RPM, engine was running perfect.
Down shifting on up hill runs to eliminate labouring the engine which there were no signs of engine labouring at all, bike ran smooth and no vibration at low RPM.
Any thoughts?

Weather conditions were perfect 23°C (73.4°F)
Oil temp ran on 108°C (227°F) going off the electronic dip stick.

I was cruising around on the farm roads for about 3 hours today, and I like about 55mph in 5th gear....Not so fast that the wind is putting the hurt on me, and 5th gear is running about 2200 rpm, and there's plenty of grunt to pass w/o downshifting....nice cruising speed and gear for me....

Oil temp ran on 164°C (327°F) going off the electronic dip stick.

Did the motor feel hot?????  That seems excessively hot.  My 110 rarely gets above 230* F, especially if the ambient temp is that cool.

Otherwise, your rpms seem about right.  No need to wind out nor lug the motor.

Wow, 327 degrees is outrageously high.  I drove thru the desert a lot this past summer (try 115 degrees for hours) and never exceeded 270/275 (the cat is removed).  You have to be burning up or the LCD dipstick reading is off (I have gone thru 3 LCD dipsticks on my bikes in the past couple of years -- JUNK!).  SJ Ron

It seems those RPM's(2200-2500) are right in the sweet spot of torque from the stock 255 cams.
That is where we (mostly ride 2-up) spend most of our time whenever we ride, personally I just don't see much to be gained power wise above 3000 RPM's

I also like 5th at about 55 mph.  Seems like there's a lot of motor still left and feels like that's the "sweet" spot.  :)

Spyd...on mine, there's no difference.  No noise from the tranny above what is "normal".

I try to keep my RPM's at 2200 or better, though sometimes I let them get down to 2000 on flat roads with no load on the engine.  2200 to 4000 is where the current 110's like to live, IMO.

x2 on the above.  :2vrolijk_21:

If riding tight mountain twisities 3rd or 4th gear, depending on speed, keeping the RPM between 2400-3200 (rapid decel will be higher) helps with control.   :2vrolijk_21:

I find that on backroads and just the general run around that 2200 to 2400 RPM is about right. I do get tired of riding in 5th at 2400 to 2500 RPM for long periods. I don't know if it's drone and the snappy throttle feel I don't like but I find myslef slowing down or just speeding up to grab 6th.

Although on my recent trips to Wyoming (2011) and Florida (2012) I find that 6th gear running about 2700 to 2800 RPM is pretty smooth. 3000 RPM is better but the ticket masters might find that speed over the limit, too far...
