Trickle charger
« on: November 19, 2012, 08:07:54 AM »

Just bought my first CVO and I read in the user manual you have to use a special trickle charger for this battery? I have always used a sears 12v 2amp trickle charger on my 09 FLHX with no issues can I still use it on my new bike?  :nixweiss:

The battery is the same as the one in your 2009 FLHX.

What exactly is that Sears charger, a plain old trickle charger or is it what's called a "Smart" charger that senses battery condition and only charges when needed?  If you plan to leave it hooked up, you most definitely want a "smart" charger, not the old fashioned constant current trickle charger that can overcharge and damage the battery.

X2 on what Jerry said.  Trickle if you plan on letting it sit as standard charger WILL cook your battery and don't ask how I know this.... ::) (work not bike related and the idiot does not work there anymore)

It only charges when needed otherwise it goes idle.

I use the hd trickle charger as soon as the bike cools down.  Battery is always fresh and seems to last a lot longer.  :)

Battery Tender Plus for me.

http://batterytender.com/?gclid=CMbms6a83LMCFUlxQgodNzMAsQ

+1

Cost about the same as the HD Smart Charger, but has a 10 year warranty vice 5 and has a 4-step charging system vice 2-step; initialization, bulk charge, absorption mode and float mode.

Thanks for posting this question Jswerve  :2vrolijk_21: I just checked the charger I leave on my wife's bike for the winter and now know why I had to replace the battery this spring.  On my bike I have a battery tender but on hers it is just a trickle charger and it must have cooked her battery last winter.  You just saved me $ 120.00 my friend  :pepper: :pepper: :pepper: :drink:
