Lifter noise '13 RG
« on: November 19, 2012, 10:16:56 PM »

Anyone experience this? Dealer says it's normal for 110 motors because of larger cams and maybe the oil not getting into the self ajusting lifters..........never know what to believe from them. Just replaced 2 lifters on '08 Dyna CVO and inner primary bearing only 10,000 mi!!!

Lifter replacement on a 110" ?
Not an uncommon issue whatsoever.

I also have the 2013 RGC CVO, there is some lifter noise. I talked to my dealer at my 1K service and he said it is inhearant to the 110 motor. My dealers words to me were "quit stressing" You have a 2 year unlimited mile warrenty. Ride it like you stole it.

das what I am talking about  :huepfenjump3:

BTW...you have a great looking bike.

I just installed the 4 point docking station, low sissy bar and the back pad that matches our seat.

I am in the process of doing a exhaust upgrade and dyno tune with before and after dyno runs.

What are you doing for exhaust? I was told V&H power duals with monster rounds.........they told me a little quieter than the high output as noise is getting to be a big issue around here!!!!

The 110 is just a noisy little motor that seems to run hotter than the rest.

I've given up worrying about. If it dies it dies so I'm just gonna riding like I stole it.

Local dealer(actually a toatally uninformed salesman) here, told a client "that noise is normal".
Yep, it was a normal noise for a 110" engine, as the rear intake lifter wheel came unglued, wiped the cam out, and scattered the needle bearing debris thru the engine, hurting the pump, and camplate as well.
From what we have seen here(6, 110"ers, with issues in 2012)I am in full agreement that those noises are, yes, absolutely normal.  :o

Well I suppose
Normal has a broad meaning. Normal as in "most are screwed up" or normal "most make noise but this is no indication of any current or future mechanical problems". I would be inclined o believe the former. Now the question is to play the dealers game, roll the dice, or be proactive and change them to a better lifter and check them as part of regular preventative maintenance, or go one step further and address the root cause. Hint: that is not poor quality of the OEM lifter entirely but that contributes.

I am putting the Fuelmoto Jackpot 2-1-2 with 2" baffles in Rush 4" Big Louie slip-ons. If I had not already bought the Rush's, i would have just re-cored with the Fullsac or Jackpot cores and saved a couple hundred $$$

ScreaminCVO, This lifter issue has been discussed many times. I have posted about it myself. What bugs me is when HD heard the noise during testing( and you know they did) you would think that their quality control would have insisted that some changes be done to make it more quiet. I have said this before, but if I would have ridden my bike before I paid for it the lifter noises and 5th gear whine would have to be gone or I would have walked. I am using a combination of fluids in my engine oil and trans that have made these noises a lot more quiet. Engine: Amsoil synthetic 60 Wt with 28OZ of Lucas nonsynthetic. Trans: Amsoil 75-140 with 6 ounces of Lucas non synthetic. This combo has seemed to quiet down the lifters and  the whine in 5th gear even in hot weather. (went from Simi Valley Ca.to Arkansas last summer with passenger and luggage). My oil comsumption is at an absolute minimum based on what I have read on many posts. At idle it runs just as quiet as the stock 80 incher I had in my 95 Heritage. Enough said. Time for a beer.CAHDBIKER

That' s quite a recipe! When  I was in Sturgis in 2010 they did an oil change on my '03 Ultra ( not a CVO) and they used Lucas synthetic with Lucas oil stabilizer and seemed to quiet that motor down.
