I guess it's time to trade mine in
« on: November 20, 2012, 05:39:53 PM »

Dang

I know there are a lot of pumpkins, huckleberries, bananas, cherries and jalapenos out there, so why in the world has it been 19 days since there was a post on this topic...

Anyway Otis and I are in the process of adding monotubes, hidden antennae and a tourpak to my ol Huckleberry. I had one fairing support broke and fixed it using a homemade bracket.

yep, those original fairing support brackets break before you can get 'em in there good....new designed ones are much better, but the best are the homemade-beefed-up ones.  Now, if only they'd design a better saddlebag support. (they're damned expensive, all chromed up and all)  I know....quit carrying all that ammo, etc. and I won't have the problems.  :nervous: har.  spyder

So am I to gather that you have broken the support that runs under the bag? I ain't never seen that before unless of course there was a wreck involved. Must have really been carrying a load. No pun intended.

Well the initial parts of the project are all done. The monotubes are in along with the HD hidden antennae and the front end is buttoned up.

Yesterday it was 41 degrees here but I couldn't resist the temptation of a little ride. I started on a particularly twisty road out by the Secret Underground Compound which winds along Bluestone river. The initial impressions were two fold. The front end is a lot tighter feeling with a lot less nose dive on braking, and the fairing no longer shook like a dope dealer at a crack house picnic. I set out only to ride a short distance given the cold, but the old sickle felt so good I ended up taking another road over the Interstate to air her out a little. About that time I remembered that I hadn't tried the radio so I turned it on and low and behold the hidden antennae actually works well..

I hit the Interstate and ran her up to around 115, then gave the bars a slight shake. In the past this type of action would have started a wobble. Not this time the old girl felt pretty solid, she kinda wigged once then wagged and that was it. I ran up beside a tractor trailer and let off so that I could make sure to catch the side draft off of the trailer to see how she felt there. AOK. By this time I was running down a long hill to a left hander with an overpass bridge right in the middle. Ran back up to 95 or so to hit the bridge. Again AOK no wobble or weaving. Needless to say I AM IMPRESSED with how the ol' girl feels. I should also mention that I had added 440's to the back before the Monotubes and that alone made her feel more solid.

Now before one of you smarta$$e$ have a chance I will say.

:worthless:

Next step to add the tourpak, and look into some new skins for the ol' girl.

A question for those who have gotten away from the OEM tires. What are the best 16" tires for a SEEG??

That's a great report on the SEEG, Shrader.  Looks like it was a worthwhile upgrade, nothing like the satisfaction or good or better than expected results from a suspension tweak.  :2vrolijk_21: What's wrong with the OEM tires?  I still like 'em.  ;D spyder

That sounded like a real HBRR ride report!  You put the right stuff on these old SEEGs and they will run with the new ones, no problem.

I like the Metzeler tires, go withe the OEM equivalent size and you'll notice a big difference in ride and handling.

Sorry its been at least 3 hours now

 :worthless:

Congrats on getting the wobble fixed.

I read into that post you are now ready to take on Ol' Hub without fear of a wobble.    :vrolijk_11: :vrolijk_11: :vrolijk_11:

Shrader I have tried, Avon, Pirelli, Harley, and Metzler

I liked the Avon's but they were the shortest lasting for me, the next were the Metzlers which I continue to use on the 02, 04, and 04   The new bikes are still on the Stock Harley Tires.    That said I am considering giving the elite 3's a shot as some say they are much improved over the older ones and last quite a bit longer than the Metzlers.    :nixweiss:

I loved the Metzlers on my '06, but the rear is rather short lived, depending on how you ride of course.  But they stick like glue and really fall into curves well.  Just keep 'em aired up well.

I have the E3s also.  I wouldn't buy anther tire. Handles great and they wear so well.  That's the way to go.   :2vrolijk_21:

Hey guys thanks for the replies so far.

So looks like the consensus is metzlers are OK, Avon's good but wear fast and e3's are great. Also Harry has worn out a bunch of tires and has Hubbard envy and Spider is either suffering from D402 denial, or been in the huckleberry juice again. :zwtf: :zwtf: :drink:

What about Michelin commander II's

I ran through two sets of the Michelin's on my SEEG, Shrader.  Better ride and stickier in the corners than the OEM Dunlops, for sure.  Seemed to wear pretty good, too.  I prefer them over the Dunlops, but never tried any of the other brands the rest of the guys are mentioning.

Do they come with the small whitewall?
