Upgraded Hinges and Lock Set
« on: November 22, 2012, 07:57:00 AM »

For years I had read positive comments regarding switching out the OEM hinges and lock set and did not proceed. My Ultra came in and I was not in town to take delivery so I had the dealer do these two upgrades. I am very impressed with the result and can now highly recommend others to do the same.

I did that with mine and love them.  The hinge side looks so cheap on the originals.

When you say "upgraded lock set," what are you referring to?  I know about the hinges, but I'm confused by the term "lock set."  Nothing has been replaced on the right side of the bike where the lock and latches are, correct? :confused5:

The photo of the right (latch) side of the tour-pak is original stock.  There are new latches from the moco.  If anyone has installed please share your photos and installation experience.  Latches on bottom of tour-pak have screws.  But those in the lid are riveted and the rivets must be drilled out.

Thanks, Jerry.  So, we only got pics of Racerdj's new hinges, not the latches/locks.  Thought I was going nuts there.

Just performed a quick picture search and cropped this for seeing the new lock set. And the top was NOT closed as there is no gap when it is closed.

I put a couple sets of the hinges on and one set of the latches on for my self and a friends. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures. You will have to drill out the rivets on the hinges.  It's not very easy to drill out the lower rivets on the lid and hold the weather strip down so the drill bit doesn't damage it. I use a 90 degree die grinder with a 2 inch 3M green grinding disc to grind the heads off of the lower rivets on the lid, all of the other rivets I drill out from the inside. You get an alignment jig to drill holes in the lid for the rear latch. The front latch is held on by the lock cylinder. Its not very hard to install the latches or hinges, just take your time. It does helps if you have an extra set of hands but I've done a few sets by myself. Hopefully this helps.

Thanks for the photos! I love the 2013 Inferno Orange. I just bought mine!!! Love it! After seeing the hinge and lock set, I am not going to buy just the covers.
