I've found a couple of old threads about this problem, but I didn't see anything in the way of a fix or any real cause for concern.  I've had two occasions in the last week or two where I've had oil on my pipes just below and behind the air filter.  The first time it happened I wasn't sure about the source and just cleaned the pipes.  The second time I felt the inside of the air filter housing and found oily residue there.  

I seem to recall having this kind of oil showing up on my '03 Road King Classic and the dealer made some kind of fix.  I never noticed this happen on my CUSE until after going to the K & N high flow filter, D & Ds and SERT.  

I'm looking for comments, suggestions, advice.  I know that this is the place to get it.

I always look for the easiest cheapest solutions first (unless something else is painfully obvious).  That being so; have you checked the oil fill level?  It's not uncommon that "full" for any given engine is less than full on the dipstick.  They all seem to have their own "happy place."  And if she's too full it'll push some out.  If that's not it then it becomes more problematic.

My bike started doing this around 12,000 miles. The dealer said that they synchronized the oil pump and so far so good. He said that he might have to replace the pump if it did not fix the problem. Another guy that lives near me has a black and orange "04" and his did the same thing only worse. They replaced his pump and he said that it was quite pitted. My problem also coincidently started 2,000 miles after my Rinehart,Big Sucker,SERT installation. My 2001 Road King Classic had the same problem and my dealer never fixed it. He just said that they all do it. It had the Screamin eagle stage one download, Vance and slip-ons, and Screamin eagle breather from the git-go. It was a stock "88". I now know that they all don't do it and I'm working with another dealership. This might not be your problem but this is what I've been told.

First, like 2lane said, try running your oil level about half way between the full and add marks on the dipstick (hot check).

Replaced the umbrella valves under the rocker box on my 'melon at about 12k for this problem.  Helped but has not totally eliminated the problem especially if run at extended high speed.  (My '99 did same thing from time to time.)  Next step is to check oil pump alignment but I am hesitant to do this since it involves good bit of engine disassembly.  Just call me paranoid but I don't want it opened up.  Even the best techs goober things up from time to time.

I realize that you don't have an EVO, but this same problem exists there too, as well as with sporty's. There is a product called "slobber-stopper" that targets crankcase mist as the culprit for the oily breather mess. J&P has a kit to correct this on sportsters and BigTwin EVO's (http://www.jpcycles.com/productgroup.aspx?GID=52F1E72A-FF80-49B7-A0EF-73377E6D82DA&search=crankcase&store=Harley&page=3). Perhaps something similar exists that would work for you. Good luck...

Had the same problem on my wife's 2003 Road King with 103 Stroker.....I replace the air filter, and the two rubber hoses that come off the engine...they were cracked.....replaced them with the new breather tubes and had to replace the bolts that screw into the top of the engine.

Problem solved.

I had oil blowing out from the breather into the air cleaner and back to the pipes, bags, and so on.  I installed the Doherty Mystfree kit and it seems to have solved the problem.  [smiley=banana.gif] -Steve

SanJoseDuke had a similar problem on the way to Cripple Creek.  Losing about a quart per day.  Pikes Peak HD installed the S&S Breather Kit and it cured the problem.  They even did it under warranty with non HD parts!

I have installed a couple of the S&S breather in problem motors, even with the mist free system. They work well!

My problem stopped when I ran the oil level between the lines on the dipstick. not up to the full line. good luck

I'll try that first as I just changed my oil not long ago maybe shes a tad too full.

My EVO doesn't "blow" oil out or spray the pipes, but interestingly enough when I dumped it on the breather side last week it "splattered" oil from the breather housing out all over.

I figure it's a liveable arrangement... if I don't wreck it, it wont puke oil from the breather. I can live with that.
