What kind of lube for shifter shaft?
« on: December 05, 2012, 08:42:30 PM »

I decided to take it out & nebchit after seeing how sloppy both (front & rear) shift levers were. The rear tightened up nice after removing bolt & putting a drop of oil in the bolt hole along with some blue loctite on threads. Gonna do the same to front & noticed the shaft was bone dry ... not a spec of lube/grease anywhere.

I have 3 choices on the shelf ...
white lithium grease
anti-seize
belray assembly lube with moly

Can't make up my mind & couldn't believe HD never put a drop of anything on a wear item like this.

Would personally use antiseize.

Yep ... a drop of that goes a mile & that's y I hate that slop, but its good stuff. I guess anything would be better than what harley put in there ... nothing! The shaft is already showing score marks from where it rubbs inside the inner primary with just under 11k miles.

If you don't mind a constant mess, you could always drill and tap a hole for a grease fitting in the primary cover.  I've seen it done, but of course without seals on each end the grease will eventually run out.  The same would be true if you just remove the shaft and coat it with grease; eventually it will liquify and run out.  Since the primary gets awfully hot, it wouldn't take long.

I'd suggest a thin coating of high temp antiseize compound.  Then I'd suggest Harley quit being so cheap and come up with a proper design.  I won't hold my breath.

I love your 2nd suggestion but the sad part is you're right. The temps there r y I hate to use anything but we'll see how much of a mess a very light coat makes.

they used to have a zerk - was a huge mess, folks complained about the mess so they changed to a plastic sleeve to make it neater

but the zerk - with the globs of grease - those will last for a half million miles and look dirty the whole time.

again - you get what you pay for and you get what you "think" you want.

when ever i have a opportunity to have it apart - ill add a zerk

I wonder how well a little smudge of high temp bearing grease would hold up.

Not sure about hi-temp grease but the anti seize is working great so far & it hasn't made a mess either so I'm happy. What an amazing difference tight shift levers and a little lube made. I went out for a few hours the other night to try it out & this thing hasn't shifted so nice in a long time ... barely clunks now. For how easy this was to do I'll take it out every oil change & put more on if needed.
