Drivers License scanned for buying disposable lighters.
« on: December 06, 2012, 02:14:50 AM »

Bought a 4-pack of Bic Lighters last Sunday at Target.  The cashier said he needed my I.D. so I handed him my license and he ran it through a card reader. WTF?

Do you have to be a certain age to buy lighters or are they recording my info for National Security?

Bad enough they started scanning and tracking personal info at stores when I purchased pseudoephedrine.

There is quite a bit of info on that little magnetic strip or chip depending on where you're from, knowing what I know about the data on them there is no way someone from Walmart would be touching my license.

I've had the experience of being asked for information while cashing out...  asking for private information including email addy, home addy  etc.

The rub is they don't ask....  they say   "what is your...?"   or   "give me your..."

I never comply. Instead I ask why they need it and the cashier always relents...  Some try and use the reason of future warranty exchanges etc....

I call shenanigans on that.!

The only time I can see a valid reason for a cashier to need to see my Drivers License is if I'm paying with a check or credit card.  As far as scanning it in... that has me puzzled. Maybe they need to archive the data just in case of fraudulent payment via CC or check...   :nixweiss:

You can demagnetize that strip. Drives the cops crazy because they have to manually enter you info during a traffic stop. Don't ask how I know this.

Don, that was so the clerk could sell all your identity info to the hood rats for identity theft.

Like mentioned above, I've been asked for email address (don't have one) and phone number (my area code and popcorn) ;)

Got a magnetic money clip? Stick it in there for a few hours or overnight. Wiped out a hotel room key in a short period of time once doing that.
