K&N Air Filter
« on: December 06, 2012, 08:21:13 PM »

Has anyone got a pro or con opinion on the K&N High Flow Air filter element?  I always used one on my carburated TC88, but I heard somewhere that the *oiled* filter may contribute to dirtying up the mass air sensor on the fuel injected models.  Anyone know if there is any truth to this?  I see that the stock HD filter element is not the type that you apply oil to.  Thanks...

There's another thread already on this subject, but the quick answer is you don't have a MAF sensor on a Harley so there's nothing to possibly contaminate.  The longer answer would note that it isn't even a problem on cars and trucks that DO have a MAF sensor.

IMHO, I would not throw away a good stock filter just to change over to the K&N filter.  But when it came time to finally replace the stock filter due to wear and tear, I personally prefer the oiled K&N filter and that's what I would use as the replacement.

cpm83, When I told my car mechanic I was putting a K&N filter on my wife's car he said just don't over do it with the spray on oil and I would be okay. I use K&N on my 09 for about 16k of the 17k miles on it and I haven't had any problems. I guess the tip is just don't overdue it withthe spray on oil and you will not hurt your mass air sensor.I just noticed grc's post pop up so I guess we don't have to worry about it on our bikes.CAHDBIKER

Thanks!  I have the K&N sitting in the box and I am going to install it.  I did not realize the HD`s do not have a MAF sensor!

cpm83, when you install your K&N air filter make sure your air filter cover does not wiggle since it is only held to the air filter with the one center bolt.(That is if it is similar to the one on my 09) If it wiggles after the bolt is tight you can purchase from HD a thick round  washer that will stick to the outside of the K&N filter, and stop it from wiggling. This takes up the gap between the air filter and chrome cover. The part is usually referred to as an "air filter service gasket" part no: 29591-99. That should stop it from breaking out at the center. CAHDBIKER

Shouldn't be a problem on his bike assuming he is still running the Ventilator air cleaner.  For those running the old football cover and round K&N element however you are right on the money.  The CVO covers starting in 2006 on the Touring models don't fit properly to the end of the filter and the center bolt can break out the nut in the filter.  It's not a problem on the bikes that have the Ventilator air cleaner though.
