New ECM with SERT Kit
« on: September 04, 2006, 10:01:46 PM »

I am about to install new pipes and air filter on my o6 Black and Crimson. When installing the new map, does this erase the existing map program. Can the origional map be copied for reloading later or would it be better to buy a new blank ECM and load the new map into it and save the origional ECM for backups? What do you think?

With a SERT you cannot retrieve any maps already loaded into the ECM so once you download a new map it overwrites the existing stock configuration. If you have a good relationship with your dealer they can re-flash the ECM to the stock config but they will usually charge for it which would be cheaper than buying another ECM module. Also, I don't think a new ECM module is pre-programmed from the MOCO so you would still have to get the dealer to flash it for you. HD should really offer the stock maps for the SERT on the software CD for all the bikes but that would make sense.

You may want to consider a "Power Commander" It will bypass your existing ECM and you can map it any way you want. Then if you need to have your original configuration you just unplug the power commander and replug your factory ECM and....... WALA!!!!! You're back to stock. Works great for warranty issues and is not detectible because you are remapping the power commander not your original ECM.

Just remember to remove the Power Commander BEFORE you go in for warranty service. It's pretty easy. Even if you break down away from home !!!!! You'll need to go to a custom dyno specialist to get it mapped. I don't think the dealers will do them. At least mine wouldn't. But I've got a GREAT dyno guy a few miles away and he does custom maps depending on your configuration. TOTAL cost was about $900 and she purrs like a kitten. [smiley=banana.gif] [smiley=banana.gif]

Removing the power commander could be smart if bike is in for warranty work unrelated to the engine.  But if you have some type of engine problem dealer can see that you've changed pipes and have hi-flow air cleaner and that you have stock map in your ecm.  Wouldn't dealer think you were running way lean if you had the power commander off?

Looks like a possible catch 22 to me.

No doubt whatsoever, ultrafxr....if you took a bike in with pipe and A/C mods and no change to the A/F mixture from stock, they would know you were either lying, or give you a hard time because of it being way too lean.

Well Depending on where you are , you would still have the oem exhaust and the oem air cleaner (under the bed in a box) . If it failed on the road have it towed home and put it back in the stock mode. then tow it to the dealer if needed, That would be my plan.

You would think the SERT would load all the parameters needed when installing a map program in a blank ECM.  In the S/R manual it says a service tech will have to install map program using a Digital Technician Unit. I was hoping the SERT would be able to do the same thing. Thanks for the info. May  have to cogitate over this a few days.
