Test Ride
« on: December 12, 2012, 01:40:17 AM »

Happpy Holidays to all! Question: If you had your bike for sale would you let an absolute stranger take it for a ride? My answer was no and have a nice day. I figure if they buy it off EBAY they will buy it without riding it so why should I let this person who said he was really looking for a newer road glide in the first place ride my pristine 09. He rode up on a average looking 08 Road Glide.CAHDBIKER

No!

Unless the purchaser had cash on hand to buy and supplied a valid CA driver's license with a class M1 (motorcycle) stamp and an insurance certificate.  If your bike is pristine and the tires are not worn irregularly, he can assume  it will ride fine.  You might also want a cash deposit.

The choice is to risk losing the sale v. risk of damage to the bike or worse....  Just my opinion....

Phantom309, I have heard of people stealing a car, then driving the stolen car to someones's house who has their car for sale, talking the seller into taking  the car for a test ride and then never coming back. I think even if they showed me their driver's license I would not do it. Eventhough  my bike has 17,000 miles on it it is pretty much mint. I know if the HD dealer was selling it used they would probably be asking more than I am. Plus their are the insurance liabilies. One more thing if you tell someone they can take your bike for a ride and you tell  the police you let them do this then they might say well you gave him permission so it is really not stolen. I am sure there is some time period for this, but I changed my adds to say " NO RIDES ". thanks for the imput. CAHDBIKER

Yep, times r tuff today so u never know what could happen. I just always hated dealing with all the tire kickers that wanna take your bike for a beat ride just to come back & give some lame reason for not liking it. It's always less hassle to trade it in but u will get beat up that way too ... u have to pay to play.

X2

I've sold a few over the years instead of trading and never once allowed a test ride.  If the potential purchaser could not tell the condition of my bike by looking at it, listening to it and reviewing all my records, they weren't that interested in the first place.  I've never had anybody return any of my bikes for a refund and always had cash/money deposited before they took ownership.  Ya done da right ting cahd... :2vrolijk_21:

Last summer there was a story going around at my dealer (Guidera Harley) where one of their customers trying to sale a bike had it ripped off when someone took it forma test drive and never returned. >:( Since hearing that I've always told myself, no way would I let anyone test drive.   But this a real tough one when you think about it.  Would you buy a used bike without test driving, I wouldn't.  I guess the next best thing, take the bike to an consignment house that carries a good theft insurance....   :2vrolijk_21:    Probably worth it in the long run  :nixweiss:

Why do I have that commercial stuck in my mind with "Mayhem" taking the chopper for a test ride?!

Our dealer has a lead bike ride with a test rider. If they are coving their bases, why wouldn't we? Personally I wouldn't let someone go down the street on one of our bikes without cash in hand.  Not only are you at loss if they don't show up again or damage it but in some states you are responsible for any damage that they might do.

Unless it was somebody that is a member here, and I've met the person previously, and trust them...NO!

There's a few members here that I wouldn't think twice about letting them ride my bike.

If the buyer had questions about the mechanics of the bike, I'd volunteer to follow them to the mechanic of their choice (within reason) and let them pay to have it checked out.

A complete stranger  -  no.  One of my buddies that I know  -  yes.  A prospective buyer can sit on it, start it up, but not ride.  Riddle me this - you let the guy ride it, he drops it, does $2,000+ worth of damage...who's going to pay for the damage?
