lifters - again
« on: December 13, 2012, 08:17:57 PM »

Im looking for lifters for my 07. I cant find any B's but have found a source on the net of the original ones - before the A's

are they any good?

is there any way to tell by "looking" at a lifter in your hand exactly what part number it is or do we have to "trust" suppliers. hd being partially more reliable than other sources.

After reading many posts I wouldn't go back in with any thing but S&S lifters. JMHO

I sure like the design of the gaterman. Lifters are easy to change trying a new set now and then isnt a big deal

This pic shows the lifters from left to right,  the  C lifter, middle is the early twincam lifter, note the tapered area of the lifter body by the roller, third is a B lifter.
The C lifter will have the oil feed hole either facing forward or back of engine, while the other two will be inward or outward. The machining on this particular C lifter looks very nice, I have pulled sets out where 3 looked like this and the 4th very rough on the unmachined surfaces, seems to be no consistency.
I like the Gaterman 1023 with 3 oil feed holes in the body and a feed hole to the axle and one to the antirotation pin.  If you like the B style Gaterman has those as well in the form of the Delphi 1021 lifter which is said to be the original B but I have noticed that they do not have the black nitrided lifter cup the B has.  I have around 30-35 sets of the Gatermans (mostly 1023's) out and running at present time.

So if you get 4 "C" lifters like the above picture then your good? What are the issues with the "C" lifters?

I have about 20 sets of the Gaterman 1023  out with no issues. Also worth noting they are the only one of the mentioned lifters that has axle oil feed to the roller with a clever edge orifice feed.
I have a Delphi replacement lifter I sell for the commodity builds (smaller cams less valve spring pressure). It does have the black nitrided cup FWIW.

How many miles should you have before you think about changing the lifters
