Oil consumption issue in the 110
« on: December 15, 2012, 08:37:41 AM »

This fall my wife and I took a fall color run to WI, on the first day of our trip I checked the oil level in the motor nd it was 3/4 of a quart low. After adding and monitoring we calculated that it was using a quart per 1000 miles. It doesn't seem to smoke when it starts and there aren't any leaks or puddles. Not real sure where its going. Has anybody else had this? My dealer seems to think its a ring issue. The good news is that we purchased the extended warranty so most everything will be covered except the new cams.

Just under 28,000 on my 2012 and she uses no oil. My 2009 had 50,000 and used no oil but lots of other parts.

Not sounding too good. My 08 has 80,000 miles, I add about 1/2 quart between oil changes.  I change oil every 5000 miles.  Some of my oil is blown back thru the crankcase vent (and I have to clean the air filter every 500 miles or so or I'll get a drip from the air cleaner - it's a stage I filter).

We are running a heavy breather, on this one, I really can't say that  I have seen any oil coming through. I am getting a little blow by into the air cleaner on my 03 Dyna.

Sounds like a ring fault you got there. You say theres no smoke when you fire up, if thats the case then that tells you the valve seals are not leaking oil down the valve stems and guides after shutdown in to the top of the cylinder so when you start up that oil deposit on the piston burns off (ie burning blue)on start ups. So that can leave two other options, your compression rings are leaking allowing crankcase presser to build witch in turn can cause leaks, oil in the air filter (ie compression blow by) there is a certain amount of crankcase through when running.
The other is oil rings. You would not necessary see smoke on start up. What can happen the crankcase presser can force the oil past the rings and the oil left on the cylinder wall will burn off through exhaust. This you can't all ways see eather, especially at the early stage of wear.
There is a way to check. Have some one ride behind you and run as normal have the follower watch your exhaust crack it now and then also pulling off from lights gear changing etc. see if there's any puffs of smoke. This may be wear the 1000mi quart may be going. Hope this is of some use.

yep, my 2010 was burning 3/4 a quart then went to over a quart every 1000 miles. 4qts in the FIRST 5000miles. cylinders were ovaled "not round" rings shot, valve guides shot. also went from about 210 miles to a tank to 140 miles to a tank.

Thought I would mention. On my 2010 FXDFSE2, I had a bad seal to the primary drive. Almost completey drained my engine oil in 2000 miles. Mechs were stumped until they cracked the primary open and it all came pouring out.
