I feel that the Dragon is overated........but everybody needs to do it once. Many good roads in Tn mountains, mostly East. 321 & 421 are two good ones.

There a lot of great rides/routes in and thru Tennessee and around North Georgia and North Carolina. I agree with 2K that the Dragon is over rated however you should also enjoy the experience. One of the rides we enjoy most, that is in the area near the Dragon is the Cherahola Skyway! Highway 64 thru the Ocoee and Natahala River Gorge are also very nice rides. I live in Chattanooga and will be happy to help you any way I can, just let me know.

The Cherahola sky way is great, the dragon is good.  Hwy 64 along the Ocoee is real nice.  Running 70 west out of Lenoir city is a great ride, so is 68 from Tellico to GA, or Tellico to Crossville.

Really it is hard to find a bad two lane in East TN.

I agree about the Dragon, overrated.  But there were some very nice roads on the way.  Beautiful country either way.

Chattanooga was my home terminal years ago when I drove for Southwest Motor Freight. Is that terminal still there & owned by US Express now? I haven't been down that way since the late '90s. Do they still have that go cart track on Lookout Mountain? A few of us went up there when we waiting for freight and had a ball ... those things flew! You had to wear a helmet or you couldn't drive ... fastest carts I ever drove, they even had enough balls to drift in the turns! I haven't come across any carts like that since then.

X2 on all of that Dave!

Chuck, have to tell you that you would really miss a wonderful road with breathtaking scenery if you don't ride the Cherohola Skyway.  While hwy 129 is fun (what y'all call the Dragon), the views are to be had before and after that 11 mile section of 129.  Still, ya gotta ride it.  Best fun is sitting in a couple of the picnic tables along the route and watching all the idiots sport riders attempt to ride like they are at Roads of Atlanta.  Make sure to stop at the crossroads of time.
Also, give one of us East TN/Western NC folks a call or email when you come through and we maybe we can meet/eat and ride with ya for a bit.

That must have been a pay to ride track, I raced Karts all over E. Tenn back in the mid 80's to about the mid 90's and was on the Board of Director's of the Tennessee Dirt Karting Association and was the head of the committee to find and approve tracks for our points races.

There was a track in chattanooga that was a 3/8 mile high bank stock car track that we raced at, I sat outside pole in Super Stock class at 116.0 mph, pole was 116.1, In the race we hooked up in the draft as was turning laps in the mid 120's, You talking about a rush with you butt 2" off the ground.

A lot depends on what route you're taking back to the Northwest and how many days you want to spend in the North Carolina/TN area.  There are a LOT of great roads up there, so you could spend a week riding if you wanted to.  If I had limited time and wanted to experience the area as much as possible, I'd ride North to Asheville, NC (the downtown area is sort of eclectic in nature), then pick up the Blue Ridge Parkway and ride West all the way to Cherokee, NC.  The BRP is a nice leisurely ride with varying altitude, up to about 6K feet.  Cherokee is the southern terminus of the BRP (an alternative would be drop down two miles into Maggie Valley, NC off the BRP to spend the night in a biker friendly town).  Then you could do a couple of different things: You could hang a right on Hwy 441 and go over the mountains through the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.  When you got to the other side, you could go into Gatlinburg, TN and spend the night and look around there (it's a tourist spot), or hang a left on Little River Road (a pretty ride) over to Townsend (the quieter side of the Smokies), to Hwy 321, then turn left onto the Foothills Parkway over to Hwy 129.  Turn left to do the Dragon.  At Deal's Gap (the end of the Dragon), you could do one of two things...hit Hwy 28 (Hellbender), which is another great road, and take it around Lake Fontana to Hwy 143, hang a right over to Robbinsville, NC, then up 129 to hit the Cherohala Skyway over to Tellico Plains, TN, OR stay on Hwy 129 and intersect with the Cherohala Skyway.  From Gatlinburg, the route I mentioned would take you the better part of a day, but well worth it.  From Tellico Plains, you could either take Hwy 68 South to Hwy 64, then West over to I-75 South into Chattanooga, TN, or you could go over to Maryville, TN, stop at a nice HD dealership (Smokey Mountain HD), then hit I-40 West to Nashville, TN, then to Memphis, TN.  Chattanooga is a great place to spend the night...downtown offers plenty of good eats, brews, and the Aquarium if you want to do that.  From Chattanooga, you can do I-24 all the way to Nashville, then I-40 on over to Memphis, TN for some Blues and BBQ down on Beale Street.  If you prefer non Interstate over to Nashville/Memphis, there are plenty of alternate routes to choose from that are two/four lane Hwys.  The possibilities are many, so depending on how many nights you want to spend getting from Asheville, NC to Memphis, TN, if you want to choose that route, would dictate some of the road choices.  As mentioned by others, the two most scenic roads would be the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Cherohala Skyway.  The Dragon is fun, but very technically challenging, so no time for looking about...you can't take your eyes off the road for a second.  The BRP and the Cherohala are big sweeping turns at higher altitudes, so lots of pretty views.  The ride on 421 through the Park is also very scenic.

Yes, U.S.Express has a new large office complex just off I-75 near the Collegedale exit here. I am unaware of a go cart track being in operation on Lookout Mountain at this time however since I am not into go-carts I could be out of that loop. Lot of changes around here since the 90's...most of them better. MidnightRider's post is 100% on point if you have the time. Like some others said let us know when you are here and maybe we can ride some if you like or at least have a mini GTG for a  :drink:

Looks like a plan to me.  Lot's of good roads to ride.  If you plan to be in the Lake Barkley area, you could attend Ribfest in May.  See the Events board for details.  There will be 50+ CVO site members in attendance, and I PROMISE that you've not had better ribs in your life.

Thanks Guys
You have given me allot to think about.

I have ridden all of the mentioned roads, no one brought up the Blue Ridge Parkway? I am going cross country next Labor day with 6 riding buddies. Fl, west to Wyoming and then east to HDVille, Milwaukee. A good friend planned the ride out, it is my job yo plan the ride home to FL. We are getting on the Skyline parkway in VA and this turns into the BRP all the way to its' terminus in GA. Can't wait! You have to do part of the BRP in TN while you are there. awesome. It is the only place i have seen a road sign that alerts to a 170 degree turn! The sign looks like a question mark!
