New Battery
« on: December 31, 2012, 12:56:12 PM »

While the bike is under wraps for the winter season I'm going to be shopping for a new battery. I still have the original (08 SEUC) Dec. of 07. I know there must be a gazillion different opinions on battery type, just like oil types, so I'm asking, "which one should I get?" The original worked fine for this long, but I noticed it cranking slow towards the end of riding season, even though I keep a tender on it.  I'm leaning toward a Deka.  Any opinions?

The best bang for the buck continues to be an AGM battery, and considering the Deka is often priced at almost half off the Harley battery it would be my recommendation.  Do some internet shopping and you may find the one you need for around $90 including shipping, assuming some of the sites run the same kinds of sales they have this past year.

X2...4 years on a battery is good service, and I see no reason to pay big bucks for one of those Lithium Ion batteries that weighs half as much on a bike that weighs 900lbs to begin with....I ain't going to notice the battery being lighter.

Deka's are available at battery outlets.  I got mine for about $90.  Same as OEM.

I have an 07 with the original bat as well. I'm having to change it this yr. all so, I've been on
the hunt for an alternative if bat outher than the HD bat from the dealer do to cost. What I've come
up with is, what you can save on the alternative bat you may well be spending on (ie) shipping, cost
of new tender as your HD tender may NOT be conpatable, witch is what I have come across.

So at the end of the day, for my self I'm going to stay with the HD bat don't have any extra cost
I don't have to change tender and I personally like the thought of keeping my girl original.

I don't know what the cost is for an HD bat on your side of the pond is but here it runs around
£175.00 pounds plus a tender at £80.00. I could have got a bat and tender for £165.00 saved 10 lost 80.

As a brother rider I thought I'd put in my two bits worth.

Have a good yr. to come and safe riding. (ho and starting) :2vrolijk_21:

since deka makes the oem batteries, i think you would be safe in the tender compatability.  though to be honest, i've never heard of a battery tender that was not compatable.  the tender attaches to your battery via the same terminals that every battery has.  now, i do know that you don't use a standard tender on the new lithium iron batteries, they have some special cell balancer thing going on, but an agm battery is an agm battery is an agm battery.....

deka etx30l: low as 89.99
oem hd: 180.00

not to be a cheap bastard (well, okay, i am ;D) but i'm not gonna spend an extra $100 for the same thing, just because it has a bar and shield on it

I'm not sure what battery you were looking at, but any battery that will work with the Harley charging system will also work with the standard battery charger.  The companies who tell you that BS are just trying to make extra profits selling "special" chargers that are neither special nor necessary.

Stick with an AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) type battery, which is what comes stock.  Perhaps you don't have the choices available to you that we have in the USA, but I'll bet there are some alternatives to the Harley battery in your country as well.  As for the Lithium Ion batteries being promoted these days, the best advice is to avoid them.  They cost too much, and the supposed benefits are overstated and the drawbacks conveniently not stated at all.

Bought a Deka battery for my wifes Road King back in March 2012 on Ebay. I think it was around $95.00 with free shipping right to the front door. Works great. Will probably replace the OEM battery in my 09' with a Deka in a couple months.

These is the bats I had looked at, my dealer says the HD tender is only good for the HD bats do to the rate of the
charge for HD bats are designed to take and the tender used on another brand bat could do more harm then good
Is this a case of dealer BS? and  so in your opinion the HD tender will work with this type of bat?

Pete, the battery that site recommends for a late model Touring bike is a Yuasa AGM battery.  It's the same basic design as the stock Harley AGM battery, so the dealer's story is bogus.  The Harley battery tender (smart charger) will work just fine, you don't need the one this place sells.

WOW, I just priced one.
$276.00
At that price if you get just three years out of the Deca, that's nine years for the same price.
Or six years for a Harley battery.

Delivered as promised.  Deka made battery - same as the Harley battery they make except for the logo.
