A friend has an 11 RG Ultra the cams are shot due to cam hardening failier does that sound about right 10,500 miles only ?

Would something better than Syn3 help ? How many are like this ?
Another friend has the same model 20k no problem .

Are you sure it's the cam surface hardening that failed, or possibly the lifter roller that failed?  We've been hearing about a lot of lifter roller failures over the past few years.

There's nothing wrong with SYN3, so that's not the issue.  Perhaps the actual manufacturing quality of the lifters or cams is just crap, or perhaps the the higher lift, heavy valves, and extra strong springs have overstressed the lifters.  I don't know that anyone can tell you with 100% certainty what the real problem is.  Harley should know, but assuming they did figure it out you can rest assured they won't be telling any of us.  It will remain a deep dark secret, just like so many of the other reliability issues they've had over the years.

If the failure mode is the cams were not properly hardened, it doesn't matter what oil is used...  I wonder if the root cause was the cams or lifters?  Cam failures are rare, lifter failures are more common...

We witnessed the lifter rollers hogged into the cam lobes on an 2002-2003(?) FLST, from North Syracuse, N.Y.. 1,200 miles on the bike at the time.
The cams apparantly never made it thru heat-treating, as you could sink the edge of a file into them.
Also saw soft(never heat-treated also) crank pins on some '90-'93, 883's as well.
Just sayin'....

shouldn't such a failure be expected to become evident very soon? Much sooner than 10.500 m i.e.?

You (I) would think so...  10.5 K is more common for lifter failures...   :2vrolijk_21:

I'd certainly suspect that as well, in in fact the cams were soft.
