2012 skunk question
« on: January 01, 2013, 09:06:21 PM »

This is my first post on this forum, although I hang out on many others. I wanted to ask the question here where all you guys hang out. I am considering trading my 2007 flhx in on a used 2012 cvo road glide, the skunk. I have a 117" in my bike, and it is custom from top to bottom. I am realistic in knowing that I can never get what I have into it back out. So my question is do these cvo`s really hold thier value that well, and if I could get the 2012 for my bike and 11-13 thousand to boot, would it be a good deal? The cvo has 13000 miles, and I am at 47000. Although the 117 is only 3000 miles old and it rocks. The 110 will feel like a turd I am sure, but I sure fell in love with that white bike.
Thanks Mark

Hold value? No, not all that much better, if any, than a standard model. The bike difference and improvement from the 07 would be the frame change that occurred on the 09+ touring models. The new frame handles much better. How much are they asking for the 12? What are they giving you for trade on the 07?. You'll always get much more selling to a private party than trade in as well.

Ps...welcome aboard!

That dealer is trying to trade!  Let's say that a guy with cash could walk in and buy the skunk for 28K or 29K.  Let's also say that you can trade for 12K difference.  That means the dealer is putting 16K to 17K in your trade in.  I would say in this instance, the non cvo streetglide (sold new for 17.5K) has held it's value very well.  I would trade before that dealer changes his mind.  I'm not taking into consideration any mods done to either bike, because it is almost impossible to get a return on investment from any mods.  Or you can look at it this way:  You are trading for about the cost difference between a CVO and a stock bike and you are picking up 5 years newer and around 34,000 fewer miles!

difference and improvement from the 07 would be the frame change that occurred on the 09+ touring models. The new frame handles much better.

Lots of difference in the handling plus the additional refinements over five model years. Also you are looking at a difference between the FLH and the FLT chassis. There is no doubt that the cost of the mods in what you have put into your 07 is something that only you can put a value on but between years, miles, chassis changes and don't forget the "new" factor there are a lot of differences.

Also, on any "built" engine there is a certain amount of investment that you will need to do for maint to keep it up and running so the investment in the 07 will continue to rise over the time of ownership.

What are they asking for the 2012?

Besides, the Skunk rocks!! :bananarock:

I think since you only have 3k on that 117ci, it's like new, really.  Unless you could sell the 07 privately, I'm not sure I would take the hit when you have that bad ass motor right now.  If you're having problems with the motor do the trade.

There's also the heat issue that seems to be more prevalent on the newer model bikes.

As far as holding their value, I can't comment on the other models, but when I went looking for a 2009 CVO Road Glide, most of them with 20,000 miles were going for ( or should I say asking ) on the average of $29,000, and only cost $30,500 new. I offered my dealer $27,500 for his 2009 CVO RG, and he turned me down When I look back, I'm glad he did. I bought a 2012 CVO Road Glide for msrp, which was $30,700.  Hope this helps.
