Blacked out hinges, latches and luggage rack
« on: January 04, 2013, 09:44:53 PM »

Well, I changed out the hinges and latches and added the lock cover all in black. The chrome luggage rack looked out of place so I changed it too. I like the blacked out tour pack and chrome on the rest. Thoughts?

FYI, the luggage rack came without studs that go through the tour pack, but instead 4 bolts that thread into the luggage rack legs. As I found out the hard way, the over sized, hollow bolt (used to run third brake light wires through, which I did), is larger than the other three, therefore so is the washer and plastic leg protector that the luggage rack sits on. Sooo, after having all three bolts in, and after threading the wires through the bolt, no an easy task for sure, I learned that I had the wrong washer and plastic foot for the large bolt. Soooo, off came the luggage rack to switch them out.

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to add more than a single photo to a post? 3 more posts with pics to follow until I lean how and if that is done!

I too added the custom dynamics turn signals, I have a Badass Brake light in back, SUPER BRIGHT FLASHING PATTERN that can be adjusted for brightness and the patern changes with a strong magnet they provide with the light.

The hinges were easy, the stock ones have two TORX screws that come off each side and then there is a hinge pin, remove both pins and the top comes right off. The hardest part is remembering what harness plugs in where from the tour pack lid,. The new hinges go on easily and the lid sits on 4 pins in the hinge body and keeps the lid standing upright while you install two screws in the upper hinge. They then have an offset bracket that covers the pins that you set the lid on and then you add the two bottom screws to hold the lid in place. As I stated in the other post, be forewarned, you have to have the top latch catches riveted in by HD as the HD rivet gun cost $385. My dealer charged me $48 to rivet the top catches in place.

Rivet nuts - common name Rivnuts - would not work in this application?

Hmm, I have never heard of them.

I know this much though; the latches and hinges total 14 fasteners, of those 14, 12 are screws, some with nuts, some into threaded parts. If there was a possibility to use nuts and bolts for the top latches, why didn't HD use them there too? The head of the screw or Rivnut would need to fit in the recessed area of the outside of top catch otherwise the catch operation might be affected. On the inside of the tour pack lid, the rivets end up right behind the rubber gasket that keeps the TP water tight. For my peace of mind, for this reason alone the $48 was well worth not having wet stuff in my TP

Have used these in place of rivets in several applications, where clearance is an issue especially.  They usually fit as flat as a rivet & work well in place of most rivets.  Not sure why MoCo did not use - possibly could be an overall strength concern or maybe they just want to make sure their shops have a reason to order & use that $385 rivet tool.   :nixweiss:

Also to add more than one pic to a post, use a linked pic site like Flickr or Photobucket & use the icon 2 to the right of the YouTube icon. Click that icon, then add the pic in the middle where the cursor blinks.

OK, I see the cursor, but do you just add the link? Is there no way to embed multiple photos in the link?

In Flickr click the "Share" button.  Copy the Http link there.  Paste that link where the cursor is flashing.

You will need to post each pic individually.  Click the pic icon above for each pic you want to post & post each pic's Http link where the cursor flashes.

If you click the "Quote" option on the post above with the Rivnuts pic, you will see what 1 pic looks like when posted, in Http form.
