HP Desktop Computer Broken Have Couple Questions?
« on: January 05, 2013, 11:10:32 PM »

First, sorry for my lack of what I am sure is basic computer stuff. Took the just over 2 years old HP Slimline Desktop down to local repair shop. Mother board is bad not worth repairing. OK. We have the HP wide screen monitor and printer that came with it, that I assume is still good. Here is the dumb question. If I buy a different brand tower say a Dell or whatever will the HP monitor and printer connect up to the new tower? Is anybody using Windows 8, which seems to be coming standard in most of the new computers. Read some reviews saying some people didn't like the latest version. Thanks for your feedback.

You can buy any brand of CPU/ desktop system including a clone and those will plug and play. Windows 8 has a certain amount of learning curve and it's not bad once you are used to it.

Thats kind of what I thought but I wanted to ask the experts here. I thought people just weren't use to the new Windows. I'm not that good with old Windows so it won't make any difference to me. My wife will use it a lot more than me. Thanks

Don't care which brand it is, inside they are more or less they same
(27 years in IT-Business).

In your caes, I would buy 2h service, to get the files/mails from the old
hard disk to the new desktop. This will reduce your lost to a minimum,
if its done by a specialist.

W7 or W8 don't care, you can get a desktop view on w8 as well. That's
what most people are looking for, after changing to w8.

Dell has a feature that deters you from using another processor after the original has been hooked up to any other components, once the new replacement unit is attached to the remaining hardware, all porn downloaded from that point on is directly forwarded to your significant other.

Just trying to help!

Your right, there is a hardware-change-detection. Attach
the old hard-disk to the new desktop (usb, ide, sata, whatever)
and copy the files you wanna keep to the new disk-drive, that
will the job and will not interfere with hardware-change-detection.

I messed with Windows 8 at Frys and didn't like it and vented my opinion to the sales gal.  She said the most people buying newer computers have same opinion and are opting to buy an OEM version of Windows 7, the sell for $45 bucks..  Someone here said that Windows 8 comes with a switchable GUI, does this actually give you the Windows 7 GUI or an updated version desktop GUI for Windows 8?

First off I own and run a pc repair facility windows 8 is garbage you can make it look like 7 its still 8 cheap for a new system yes but you have to buy apps for it just to do most of the things that come standard as far back as 98 its a over grown cell phone designed for touch screens this is going to be another windows vista-millenium things the 2 systems to do are xp-pro and win7 just my observations having worked with all of them alot.

Everywhere the same: old things were always better, were more reliable and more stable.

You don't have to buy apps, there is enough and good freeware around, which will
do most tricks. With a program like http://ninite.com/ you can select which
one you need and install all apps in one step. It will keep these apps updated as well.

w8 is garbage: what do you expect from a product, they sell for less than 20 $ (promotion until
end of jan, i think) ? But MS do help a lot of families to receive their income as well.

I also work in the computer industry....I have a feeling that Windows 8 will not make it in the work environment since there are too many things that you need to do to make it mouse friendly. I have a feeling Microsoft will (or should) realize this and change things up for the next version. It's hard to make one OS that works well on phones, tablets and in the enterprise work environment.

Not to mention the learning curve going from Win 7 to Win 8....Plenty of new PC's out there still coming with Windows 7.....it works and you will be happy.

Was not talking work.....but was talking about the poor design of Windows 8 if you don't have a touch screen.......or the fact that it does not work very well on a non tablet or phone device. The work reference was to the fact that if it does not work well in the enterprise it may not be long before Microsoft re-designs it since they don't want to lose that many sale opportunities.
