Shipping
« on: January 14, 2013, 07:32:30 PM »

We are thinking about relocating from Macon GA to Tucson AZ.  I went online and googled motorcycle shipping.  It seems everyone wants about 1k per bike.  Really?  I also have to purchase additional insurance to cover loss.  Really?  So they want 1k per bike and no liability.

Maybe I should start a motorcycle shipping business.  It sounds like a low risk / high profit business.

Until you get the quote for the insurance and taxes you need to own, drive and maintain a large truck!

Did the OTR thing years ago.  I know all about motor carrier rules.  Thats why Im aghast at what they charge.  Not to mention that if I want pickup and delivery on a specific date it is at an additional cost.

I think I will move them myself.  Ive always done it that way anyway.

The process of moving them yourself is often reffered to here as "riding".

Im probably in the top 10% mileage wise of those on this board that ride or claim to ride.

Many on here, my self included put over 20K a year on their bikes.  I did just over 23K this year, and am off shore at least 6 months a year.  I am low compared to a couple of the people on here I ride with.

Dont ride to work, I fly.

Lets see Trip around lake MI, Trip to the Keys, Trip to the Ozarks, a Second Trip to MI, two trips to Panama City, one to Daytona.  And lots of Day rides in the Smoky Mountains.  Most all with my wife, on her bike.  My rides are for pleasure.

If I told my wife to drive the car with the kids, dogs and other stuff while I rode my motorcycle she'd divorce me.

Somebody that I work with, former member here by the way, he has had at least four bikes shipped using Federal and has never had a problem.  The cost a few years ago seemed to be about $750 a pop, but fuel has gone up too.

Federal is a division of Allied Van Lines, the trucks that haul the bikes are dedicated to that purpose and the drivers know what they are doing.

Sounds reasonable to me.  It's 1800 miles from Macon to Tucson.  Should take about $400 in fuel, plus driver's pay, wear and tear on truck, truck insurance, will driver need lodging, does driver get meal per diem, etc.?  Start deducting expenses and there's not much left.

Federal is good.  I use them to ship the SERG from Los Angeles to Atlanta and back.  $1,265 dollars total.  They did minor damage to the fairing on the way back but made it good.  I'd use them again.

If you use the search function here, you'll see many favorable comments.
