doherty power pack blow by
« on: September 10, 2006, 09:33:34 AM »

I have the power pack on my 103 and I have been getting a lot of oil coming out the vent, which is soaking the air filter.  It's getting all over everything.  I know there should be a little oil coming out, but this is excessive.  Anybody have any ideas?

How full are you running your oil, overfilling seems to be one of the causes for this. These motors like to have the oil level about 1/2 way between the add and full mark, check when hot!

Another thing that can be done is to add the S&S reed valve. AI magazine did a write up on these that is very informative. I have installed a couple of these in bikes that had continuing blow by and the problem was solved

The Mystfree is a good kit, but it won't completely stop the oil flow.  (We learned from experience.)  The oil pump seems to be the key.  It's either out of alignment or one of the orings that seals it has gone bad/gotten a nick in it.  Hope that helps.

The S&S reed valve solves the problem. Here is the cut sheet on the unit.

Thanks  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I put the S&S reed valve in my 113". It solved the problem. Do it when you change your cams. For the price you can't beat it. You won't be disappointed.

puckowee,

I would suggest you also need the Doherty Mystfree breather kit, it stops the blow by which you have & it works great for me!

I think their labor quote is off a little....It says 11 1/2 hour install. But you only have to lift up tank and remove rocker boxes. I think 1.5 hours would do it. :-/

Cheers

I can't answer that [smiley=confused5.gif]. I have the stock pump. It should mention it on the S&S website.

The same thing happens when you re-oil the air filter. When I re-oil, I let it dry in the sun for an hour or so and then lightly blow off the excess with compressed air held at least 18" away from the filter element. As for the engine oil blowing out SE air cleaners have always been notorious for this and there was even an H-D service bulletin issues about how to modify the backing plate to try and eliminate the problem. The stroker engines develop even higher crankcase pressures and there are vent kits made to help relieve the crankcase pressure. I just worked on a custom built Harley 103" chopper that had a high volume oil pump on it that would build up so much pressure it would blow the oil filler cap off the tank. The only solution after trying different things was to not fill up the oil resevoir tank so high.
