Big Bore Kits?
« on: September 10, 2006, 03:12:20 PM »

Just bought a used Ultra Classic and as it sits now it has a stage 1 kit with Rinehart true duels. My original plan is to do a 95+ kit. My question is... Is an 103 kit as dependable? I ride near 10,000 miles a year and would not llike to sub dependability for performance. I am aware that any mod you do takes away from it's original state. I will probably stay with HD but any info or input on other companies would be greatly appreciated.

Tommy O,
It all depends on your Riding Habits.  I know of some 95+ Twin-Cams, that will dust stock 103's.  I would wager the dependability to be close to the same.  If you're like me, and everyone else I know, you are taking the first step on a long journey.  Once you do a MOD, that you can really feel, you're hooked for more of the same!  So, save yourself some time, and money, and puch it to a 120, and be done with it!  There endeth the lesson.  Later--HUBBARD

Reliability is not an issue if you use proven combinations of heads, pistons and cams and have it done by a professional. If your pocketbook can afford it I would look at doing the 113" combination using Screamin Eagle parts. I firmly believe in OE factory designed and tested parts and personally have had great luck using only SE parts. I know there are alot of other quality parts out there but mixing and matching different manufacturers components can sometimes be a good thing or sometimes a very catastrophic thing.

I bought my sled new in 04.
never rode it with the stock 88.
no problems at all.
the only thing i did not like was the cam.
i changed out to the 251, but had to do a little head work.
if you go with the hd 103 kit, and the zippers 575 cam, you will be very pleased with the mod

tommyo the big question that came to my mind was how much do ya want to spend? If your gonna splurge the 4 3/8" stroke flywheels that are used for the 103 upgrade is the same as the new 96" motor so I am assuming that MOCO feels confident with the durability however seeing how your gonna split the cases you might as well buy the 4.06" barrels/pistons and get yourself a nice 113" motor. Now if you don't wanna spend alot, their are plenty tried and true 95" combos that will produce over 100HP and give you a really fun scooter. [smiley=pumpkin.gif]

Fender,
I think I'm stuck on a 95+ kit with heads. Everyone tells me they are getting really close or same #'s as an 103 kit and it is a few dollars cheaper. The 103 is still not out of the question. Have to beat up on a buddy with a '06 SEEG.

My 95 has 101 lbs ft /98hp and I'm only running a .510 lift cam, with a properly built 95 it's not a problem achieving big numbers and reliabilty .I am planning on selling it, and moving to an 07 Bagger , then a 103 is more feasible as it's only a big bore, although I'll probably go to a 107.

The cost of doing a 103 /6 speed on mine was just not worth it.

nidan,

So the 103 is not worth the extra coin? Stick with the 95+ kit.

tommyo,

For a bit extra money I went with the Jims 120, sold my SE 103", that paid for the majority of the change over.

You can buy a new Jims 120 for apprx. US $6,800 - $7,200 on eBay. Of course reworked heads and a .640 - .675 cams you will have yourself an engine putting out over 125/130 hp. And may I add a prety dependable set up.

Do not know what a Zippers or S&S 120/124 set up would be.

Rooster,

I assume you mean the S&S and Zippers Engines, are $10,000? I always thought they were higher than JIMs 120.

That was the last time I was looking at them, could be more now, seems like the zippers was more than s&s. There is a dealer in Gladstone Oregon called Latus Motors HD that has an exchange program, your stock motor for the Jim's 120 but you would have to contact them for the price. Their performance guy is Mike Stegman, very well known has had a couple of articles in American Iron Mag recently. I have had him do work for me as well as several friends. Super nice fellow, real personable and very well respected around the area. He has a forum on the dealer website and will answer any performance ?s you may have. Also excellent SERT tuner as well as Power Commander but seems to prefer the SERT.
