Saddlebag Lid Speakers Leaking?
« on: January 19, 2013, 12:47:01 PM »

OK all.... I have gone through many amp and speaker upgrades on my 2011 CVO Street Glide, and I am now looking into adding speakers to the saddlebag lids.  The problem is I am hearing from my local dealer that there have been "several" 2012 and 2013 bikes that leak..... They did not tell me under what circumstances that happened, but I was wondering if there are more out there????? :coolblue:
It would be good to know if the problem was a poorly sealed speaker frame or if the speakers themselves were the problem.... if there is a problem???? :nixweiss:
Thanks! :orange:

Through a couple torrential rain storms, parked in the rain over-night a couple times, and a couple hose washings and not a drop inside the bags.

No problem with leaks on my ride. And being n England it has been in quite a few downpours.

The most important thing to do is use a speaker with a bridged type tweeter.  A regular coaxial with a post mounted tweeter has a gap around the post. It will leak there. The hd stock speakers are bridged also. I upgraded mine recently and used a pair from Rockford fosgate.  They are 5x7s and sound very good to me. I just saw that biketronics has a 6x9 just released.  Also with a bridged tweeter. Those do take up more space in the saddle bags. I went this  route and I'm nice and dry.   Stuart.

My right side lid had a small leak which would allow into the bag when I washed the bike.  Rode up to the HD shop and they applied a sealant under warranty.  Not a drop in the bag since.

Hybrid audio just came out with a new 5x7.  I'm sure it will sound great and won't leak.  It has the bridged tweeter.  I just placed my order.  Still a month or so out.  Ain't no more alimony a beautiful thing?? :orange: :) :pineapple: :D
