Long distance for a Kendon trailer OK?
« on: January 22, 2013, 01:38:54 AM »

I am planning to take a trip from AZ to MN and will be there for about a month to see family. Wife won't ride that far and doesn't want me to ride it alone. I recently purchased a used Kendon single trailer.  It works great for around town. Not sure if it is something I want to take on a 1500 mile trip one way and then back home again.

Any thoughts or experiences with a long distance haul on a Kendon?

Be sure the wheel bearing are in good shape and carry a spare. Go for it!

I have a Kendonon double and have taken it from Los Angeles to Phoenix and back several times. The Kendonon website has instructions for checking and greasing the bearings. It is quite simple.   :2vrolijk_21:    Also be careful with the air pressure in tires.  I haven't checked the numbers a while but believe it to be 50 psi.  Check the tire sidewall.

I'd carry a grease gun with me and check every gas stop...along with psi.. should be fine.

Don't have a Kendon, but a similar trailer (Droptail).  I towed my CVO on a trip (1500+ miles round trip) without incident using my Jeep Wrangler.  I couldn't really tell I was towing anything.  You should be fine.

I strapped my bike down with two sets of straps upfront, and one set in the rear.  Also, I added a set of mudguards to the Jeep's rear wheels to prevent throwing debris on my bike.

Checking the trailer/vehicle wheels by hand for excessive heat can alert you to bearing and brake problems.

Trailer hitch mud flaps are nice to protect the trailer from rocks.

Motorcycle Handle Bar Strap 18'' (Pair) Red (These can be used all over the frame and help keep the buckles away from the bike and makes tying down easier.  Strapping to handlebars not recommended by many CVOers though!)

Not trying to start trouble, but man, you've got the best bike H-D makes for a long haul trip.  I had a 2011 RGU and that bike eats up the road.  In the 2.5 years I owned mine I made four trips to California from Washington State, a minimum of 950 miles each way.  You're missing a really nice ride...

It might not make a big difference...but, I like to trailer the bike with an almost empty fuel tank. No need to have an extra 50#s of weight up high on the bike.

Braymond-No trouble. I really want to ride it there and back but the Mrs. doesn't want me riding that far alone.  I agree it is a great bike. I have been on many trips with friends. In the 2.25 years I've had it I have almost 30,000 miles.

Davidson- thanks for the info.

Water weighs about 8.3 lbs/gallon and is much heavier than gasoline.

Gasoline is just a little over 6 lbs/gallon.

I have a Kendon.  Check it once at the first rest stop, after that do not give it a thought.  How full the tank on the bike doesn't matter. the tire pressure on the bike doesn't matter.  If the straps are snug no worries. Just listen to the radio and don't give it thought until you get to where you are going.
