Wander, don't take it personal. We all have opinions on subjects and oil (Syn or Dino or combination) is one of those that gets folks attention. As for your question as you stated, you expected this to open up a can of worms....yep, shore dun dat...

As for oil (no matter what kind we are discussing) causing pre-mature wear, I would assume the oil comments from HD techs have to be based on poor maintenance (maybe using VERY old oil the filter hasn't been changed or there is a filtering issue in those motors) but that wouldn't be the oils fault. My guess is that the syn or dino are fine either way and that the parts are the issue. Also, may not just be the parts but also the lack of oil delivery to the needed areas of the motor which would go back to the MoCo on design. The MoCo has been cutting corners for years on their parts (remember the Timken bearings...or lack of Timken bearings...issues years ago?) and use the lowest bidder/cheapest parts to max out their profit. Nothing wrong with that as long as the parts hold up to the specs. Problem is, they aren't holding up. We just went through a big recall on the rectifiers (sorry, product program) because they met specs but poor quality internals meant they wouldn't hold up in the long run. We get what we pay for....you would think big companies would realize this.
So, oil is oil. I'm happy to use either in my MINI, Ford or HDs (both of 'em). I'm using the syn in the MINI and HD (CVO) because research shows that type should hold up better with the heat issues on the 110. I had a 98CI on my 09 SG and used dino oil. Run dino in my wife's super low. Research the issues and make up your own mind on it.
My two cents......have a great day today.
