CB squeal
« on: September 11, 2006, 07:57:25 PM »

I am using a J&M headset on my '06 Screamin Eagle Ultra.  Don't use the cb all that much but have noticed a squeal (like feedback when a mike is too close to an amp) when I transmit.  I am using the new J&M lower cord ZH which is designed for the new '06 HK radios.  It does not squeal with the std H-D headset.

Sent lower cord back to J&M and even though they found no problem they sent me a new one.  Same problem.  While sitting on the bike without it running I did notice that if I pulled the mike about 6" away from my face it lessened the squeal.  Also if I lean over the tank it stops.  Makes me think that it is indeed picking up feedback from the cb antenna.  Is this possible?  Anyone else have this problem?

I use a J&M lower cord (BR)- and mine does not make any sound (Squeal) like you describe. Is your Software 8.9? Also if you are coming to Maggie Valley I would be glad to let you test my bottom cord on your bike to see if it make any difference.

What setting is your VOX on? It might be that your mic is live? and do you have the int com on as well as the cb check you squelch setting to lowest.

Just some stuff for you to try if you have not already done it.

Let us know how it works out.

Hey's that's just everyday trick riddin' for me  ;D Pull the seat and see if the seat is pinching any of the wiring harness with you sitting on it that may be enough pressure to cause a problem. worth a look see you there.

I have the exact same symptom ultrafxr and have tried 2 different helmets with the J&M setup plus 2 different lower cords, no luck yet. I too looked at the antenna grounding but didn't try touching it like you did, I'll try that tonight. I normally don't use the CB either but when riding with a group of friends it does come in handy keeping the group together.
I was also going to try my original HD mike to see if it too squealed like the J&M.
I have my 5,000 maintenance check this coming Sat. and will point out the problem to the service rep. and see what they say.
I ride an 06' Screamin Eagle Ultra too and also will be in MV soon.

Please let me know what your find out at your maint service.  I figured that since it doesn't do this on the stock H-D headset they wouldn't want to go out of their way to find a fix on a part that wasn't theirs.  BTW I emailed John the owner of J&M per his cust svsc rep's request about my problem.  Haven't heard back from John but the cust svsc rep said the new lower cord was shielded.  I'm thinking that maybe that is the problem - the wiring in my mic & headset are not shielded and are picking up the interference.  Hopefully we'll find out what is going on and get it resolved.

I don't like to use the cb a lot but when riding with friends or the HOG group it sure comes in handy to communicate hazards, turns, gas stops, etc.

if you tried to turn the mic amp down and it didnt work find a cb shop and have the match checked,if the match is off it could cause a feed back and eventually burn thr tranmitt up on the radio, but I would think hd would have checked that

I agree, the swr can affect alot of things. Here is another thread I saw on the subject.http://flhrsei.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?num=1150671805/13#13

Also did you install the software upgrade?

FYI, on my CUSE the SWR was off far enough that if I were to use the CB alot, it would have burned itself up.  I was pegging the meter at channel 19.  After taking about 2" off the antenna, the SWR is down below 1.5 at the ends and under 1 in the middle.  The MOCO and the dealers don't even begin to look at this.  If you use your CB, you should check things.

I am at the latest software version.  Have not checked swr but will see if I can find a shop or someone with a meter to test this.
